The song is on the album Blurryface contain, the fourth album by the band on 15. May 2015 was published. The song was written by Tyler Joseph , the band's lead singer, and produced by Mike Elizondo . content

Tyler Joseph is named as the song's only songwriter , according to Billboard Magazine . The song is about the longing for childhood and the pressure in adulthood. The singer, also Tyler Joseph, sings from the point of view of Blurryface , the title character of the album of the same name. In the first verse, Tyler Joseph raps in a clear voice saying he wished his songs and his voice were better and tells about how he was once told that his fears and insecurities would go away once he was older. This is followed by other ideas from his childhood, which he contrasts with the developments that he observes as an adult, combined with wishes for changes in his life. Again and again the singer explains in the song that his name is Blurryface , that he doesn't care what the listener thinks of him and that he wishes to be able to turn back time. Looking back on the lost childhood says Tyler Joseph disappointed: Now we're stressed out (. English for now we are stressed ).

The 3:45 min long song is intense and varied and combines a wide range of musical styles.

background

Joshua "Josh" Dun and Tyler Joseph

Tyler Joseph sings in two different voices in the song. In one voice range, Tyler Joseph describes his childhood in a mental visit, in the other voice range he speaks as a blurryface from the perspective of an adult. Tyler Joseph expresses nostalgic thoughts and what stresses him out in various passages of the text:

  • "I wish for the 'good old days"
  • "I feel nostalgic for childhood"
  • "We can't go back to childhood because we need to make money and be successful"

Tyler Joseph expresses that he would have liked to have written better songs in his life and extends his wishes: I wish I found some better sounds that no one's ever heard […] I wish I found some chords in an order that is new […] My name is Blurryface and I care what you think. At the end of the line of text in which Tyler Joseph wishes he had found new chords without having to rhyme while singing, the singer consciously avoids the expected rhyme.

The puzzling title of the album is also taken up in the song Stressed Out , when Tyler Joseph sings in the chorus: My name is blurryface and I care what you think. About the symbolism behind the name Blurryface , which can be translated as an indistinct face , Tyler Joseph said: This is a guy who embodies everything in which I - but also everyone around me - am unsure. [...] When I think about insecurities and that my insecurities get the better of me, I think of a feeling of suffocation and also of the things that I create with my hands. The name of the singer's alter ego is also an expression of Tyler Joseph's self-doubt: Blurryface is the guy I try to understand - and defeat every day.

publication

The album Blurryface was released on May 15, 2015 on the independent label Fueled by Ramen . It was the band's fourth studio album. The song Stressed Out itself was available in advance as part of the pre-order for the album on iTunes and was offered on April 28, 2015 in the Google Play Store and on Amazon . The song is also included on the double CD Best of 2016 - Summer Hits , released on May 20, 2016 .

Music video

On April 27, 2015, one day before the song was released, a 3:38 min long music video for the song was published on Youtube . It was directed by Mark C. Eshleman, the band's creative director. The video is very closely linked to the lyrics of the song and illustrates it through the use of typical things from childhood. The angle at which the camera usually shows a perspective from a low point of view or at eye level reinforces the longing for childhood. The gloomy lighting in the video, which creates a grayscale effect, and the uninviting weather underline Tyler Joseph's feeling of being stressed and unhappy.

Children on tricycles

The video begins with the singer Tyler Joseph, carrying a backpack, riding a tricycle with oversized tires down a road that is in a desolate state. In doing so, he expresses some insecurities in his singing that he has observed in himself. Tyler Joseph visits a friend and after a familiar greeting ritual begins to get nostalgic and to sing about his childhood. Later both of them ride their tricycles on the road together. At a later date, Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun are shown asleep, being watched by several dark-clad people. At the end of the video, the singer explains in a deep voice that he has to make money. He has become a blurry face again.

In the video, Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun visit places they know from their childhood, including their old bedrooms. Much of the video was filmed at Dun's childhood home and on two streets in the suburbs of Columbus , Ohio, where the band members grew up. Dun's parents were forced to change their phone number after the video was released, and his childhood home became a place of pilgrimage for fans of the Twenty One Pilots. According to Tyler Joseph, the special greeting of the two in the video is based on an old, secret handshake that the two musicians had previously rehearsed. The dark-clad people seen towards the end of the video are the sisters, fathers, mothers, and brothers of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun.

According to Tyler Joseph, the black color that the singer wears on his neck and on his hands in the video is supposed to represent the character Blurryface and express the uncertainty that Joseph talks about in the lyrics and which he especially feels when he is doesn't know what to do with his hands. The video was nominated for Best Music Video at the 2016 Alternative Press Music Awards and Favorite Music Video at the 2017 Kids' Choice Awards .

Reviews

Fiete Oberkalkofen from 1 Live recognizes a strong and intrusive sound in the song, which struggles between calm and an outbreak and also describes: Singing and rap harmonize here without any obstacles. Electronic gadgets are carefully arranged and you have to keep in mind while listening that Twenty One Pilots consists of only two people. Rarely have you heard such a powerful sound from a duo.
