New Year's Eve run Trier
The Trier New Year's Eve run (the official name for the Bitburger New Year's Eve run after the main sponsor, the Bitburger Brewery ) has been a running event in downtown Trier on New Year's Eve since 1990 .
The event is divided into various fun runs for women, men, young people and children as well as two street races , the “Bitburger Run of the Asse” over 8 km and the “Sparkasse Elite Run for Women” over 5 km. The race is on a 1 km long circuit; only in the men's fun run was a slightly longer (approx. 1.45 km) but essentially identical lap that holds more runners avoided until 2009 because of the crowd. Meanwhile, the people's runners are again running on the traditional 1 km lap. National and international top athletes on the one hand and a Mediterranean atmosphere of samba rhythms paired with confetti rain, whistles and sparklers on the other hand give the event the nickname "Germany's São Paulo" based on the Brazilian Corrida Internacional de São Silvestre .
history
In the summer of 1989, their two long-distance runners, Christoph Güntzer and Berthold Mertes, who were friends, had the idea of holding a New Year's Eve run in downtown Trier. A circuit of just 1 km with start and finish on Trier's main market offers spectators the opportunity to experience the runners up close several times on their laps. Furthermore, the entire spectrum from popular to top-class sport should be covered in various runs. At the premiere organized by the Eintracht Trier running group on December 31, 1990, the concept was accepted by athletes and spectators alike: despite the rain, 648 runners started, and Werner Schildhauer, a top German runner, was won for the Aces run , and several thousand spectators lined the route.
After the running group found a new club with TV Germania Trier , the following year the women also received prize money. A class field among women with the later marathon world record holder Tegla Loroupe at the top was the deserved reward. In 1992, the well-known television presenter Wolf-Dieter Poschmann was able to win another draft horse for the event. A year later, the Kenyan hurdler Gideon Chirchir managed to defend his first title at the Trier New Year's Eve run. In 1995, a well-known sponsor, the Bitburger Brewery , got on board and helped to ensure continued sporting highlights for the following years with the guaranteed funds. After the successful development of the running event, the Silvesterlauf Trier e. V. founded in order to put the organization on a solid basis for the following years. In 2007, the previous record was reached with 2043 reports and 1647 finishings.
