The Destiny class was developed as a series of post-Panamax cruise ships in the first half of the 1990s by the Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri and the American shipping company Carnival Cruise Lines . In the planned form, however, only the type ship was built, which was the largest cruise ship in the world with a measurement of over 100,000 GT in 1996.
The Destiny design served as the basis for the 16 ships of the Triumph , Conquest and Concordia classes in the years that followed . The ships of the Dream class , which were built from 2008, and the ships of the Vista class can also be traced back to the Destiny class.
The design comes from Joseph Farcus and is characterized by an extremely short bow and a spacious hull. This makes the ships primarily suitable for use in the calm waters of the classic cruise regions ( Caribbean , Mediterranean ) and less suitable for Atlantic crossings .
The Triumph class was created in the late 1990s as a direct development of the Destiny class. With the same hull dimensions and comparable technology, it was expanded to include a further passenger deck (Deck 10 - Panorama Deck). Despite the comparatively minor modification, the Carnival Cruise Lines series is managed as an independent construction class. After the shipping company put two ships into service, this type was also used for two ships of the Costa Crociere shipping company.
Machine system and drive
The ships of the Destiny and Triumph classes are equipped with diesel-electric machinery. The four 16-cylinder diesel engines and the two 12-cylinder diesel engines are Sulzer developments (ZA40S series), which were initially built under license by GMT ( Grandi Motori Trieste ) and later by Wärtsilä . The motors develop at a speed of 514 / min, a cylinder power of 720 kW (980 hp) and respectively drive a generator of ABB , whose nominal voltage is 6.6 kV. These generator sets supply the entire ship with electrical energy.
The ships are driven conventionally with a shaft system and rudder. Two three-phase motors act directly on the two fixed propellers . As a maneuvering aid, three cross-thruster control systems are installed in the bow and three identical systems in the stern. Their controllable pitch propellers are driven by electric motors with an output of 1,720 kW (approx. 2,340 hp) each. A pair of fin stabilizers dampen rolling movements.
Furnishing
The Destiny class is equipped with 12 passenger decks and designed for approx. 2,600 to 3,400 passengers. The ships of the Triumph class offer capacity for around 2,700 to 3,500 passengers on 13 passenger decks.
