True Combat: Elite ( TCE or TC: E for short ) is a freeware first -person tactical shooter that the “Team Terminator” developer group created as a modification of the game Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (W: ET). TCE is a so-called total conversion , i.e. H. With Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory as the technical basis, a multiplayer title with independent content and game mechanics was developed, which focuses on realistic gameplay and high-quality graphics. The range of functions of the Quake engine from WET has been expanded for this.

The current version 0.49b is fully functional despite the beta addition and runs under the Microsoft Windows , Linux and macOS operating systems . In addition to the TC: E-Download, the current version of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is required for installation (also free of charge).

Story of the game

The development team "Team Terminator" began in 2000 Quake3 - Mod called True Combat develop. After TrueCombat version 1.0 was published, development was initially discontinued. The team now had the plan to build the previously existing mod not on Quake3, but on the improved engine from Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. So the game could be obtained for free by everyone and you no longer had to buy a Quake3 version. Since the end of 2004, TC: E has been actively developed. In 2007 the last current version TC: E 0.49b was released for download. However, it was decided to keep the True Combat: Elite 0.49b version in beta, and it became known that a large part of the team had withdrawn from developing TC: E due to lack of time. After a four-year hiatus, one of the main developers surprisingly announced in March 2010 that they were working on a new version of TC: E, which will now be called TrueCombat: Close Quarters Battle (CQB).

Specops against terrorists

Game overview

By eliminating the opposing players or fulfilling mission objectives, the individual player receives points. The mission objectives are z. B. for terrorists the planting of a bomb or for the spec-ops the defusing of the same. Points are deducted from the respective player for killing team members ( friendly fire or "teamkill", TK for short). On public servers the player can also be “punished” differently for a team kill, but this is handled differently from server to server.

The game includes some special features, such as aiming with the rear sight and front sight, leaning around corners, realistically calculated penetration of surfaces as well as physics corresponding to the engine for the ballistics of the projectiles.

True Combat: Elite depends on good coordination within the team.

Teams

The Global Intervention Force "GIF626" (of players like abbreviated as "Specops" what a portmanteau of "based Spec ial op erations force s " is) is a special unit consisting of members of the US Delta Force , the British SAS, the German KSK and GSG 9 , to name just the most important. The team relies on an armament that is common in the countries of the western hemisphere.

Your opponent is an international mercenary unit which is only known by the synonym "Die Einheit" (Eng .: The Unit). It is alleged that some members of this organization were once part of the special forces listed above, but the seduction of money was too strong. When it comes to armament, this group relies primarily on makes of eastern origin. Among other things, the well-known AK47 assault rifle and other weapons such as the MAC10 submachine gun or the SR8 sniper rifle are included in the arsenal.

Objective

The "Objective" game mode ( OBJ for short ) is most reminiscent of Counter-Strike in its style of play . One of the terrorists starts with a C4 explosive charge , which can be attached to one of the two places specially marked with "A" or "B". The goal of the terrorists is to plant the bomb and defend it until the timer has expired. The spec ops must either prevent the bomb from being planted by eliminating the terrorists beforehand or defusing the bomb. A defusing set (tech kit) that the Recon player class can use significantly reduces the time required. The game mode is based on individual rounds. The two groups start at two fixed points on the game map, the " spawn " zones. Each player can choose weapons and other equipment ( hand grenades ) at the beginning of each game round . A round usually ends after a certain time limit, when the mission objectives have been met or when one of the teams is eliminated. Players who were shot down during a round can only play again in the next round and are spectators for the rest of the round.

Victory for the Spec-Ops:

  • All terrorists are dead (and the bomb has not yet been planted ).
  • Bomb was defused (if it was planted by the terrorists).
  • The bomb was prevented from being placed in the specified time

Victory for the Terrorists:

  • All spec ops are dead.
  • Bomb has detonated.
Body count

The "Bodycount" game mode ( BC for short ) is most reminiscent of the team deathmatch mode from Quake . The team members collect points by eliminating the opposing team members. The team with the most points wins after a given time. The players respawn after a certain time after their death. All that counts is the players' shooting skills.

Reinforced objective

The "Reinforced Objective" game mode ( R-Obj for short ) is a capture-the-flag mode. The players respawn immediately after their death, as in the body count mode. However, there is now a flag on the ground at the opposing flag point on the map, which must be brought to your own flag point. For successfully collecting the flag, 20 kills are credited to the player's account.

Player classes

Each team is divided into the following three player classes:

Assault (striker)

The strikers among the spec ops have as their primary weapon u. a. the M4 and M16 available while the terrorists use the AK47. Additionally, the strikers are the only class that can use the MK3A2 grenade.

Recon

Unlike the striker, the scout is equipped with light weapons such as the MP5 (Spec-Ops) or the MAC10 (terrorists) and can use smoke and stun grenades.

Sniper

In addition to a sniper rifle such as the HK PSG-1 (spec-ops) or the M76 (terrorist), the sniper only has a handgun and smoke grenades at his disposal.

weapons

True Combat: Elite offers a total of 32 weapons, 16 of which are available to each team. Each player carries a primary and secondary weapon, as well as a knife and a class-based number of grenades.

A player can only carry one of each weapon class, so carrying several assault rifles is impossible. In addition, killed players do not drop hand grenades, their knife or the secondary weapon (many fans have already asked to change this).

technology

Compared to Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory has doubled the standard texture resolution at TCE to 512 * 512 pixels and the maps are also more polygonal by lengths. Up to 15,000 polygons per map are possible. The game uses the Quake 3 engine . This has been significantly expanded to include effects such as high dynamic range light calculation and texture tone mapping and offers attractive 3D graphics. Another feature is the so-called Dynamic Eye Adaptation, or DynEA for short. For example, if the player moves out of a dark room into daylight, the effect of adjusting the brightness of the pupil of the human eye is visually simulated. In spite of everything, the Quake engine is so scalable that the game can still run on weaker computers.

Current version 0.223 alpha

March 2010 one of the main developers of TC: E announced that a new version of TC: E is in the works. The further development of TC: E now bears the name TrueCombat: Close Quarters Battle (CQB) and on March 31, 2011, a first alpha version 0.22 was finally released.

Innovations

Innovations include significantly improved graphics, new weapon and game features and more realistic game sequences as well as improved HDR , a reflex sight and realistic ballistics .

The player classes and game modes of TC: CQB are identical to True Combat: Elite, but there are now so-called "perks", ie certain skills that not all player classes have, but must be selected manually in the menu. This includes silencers that can be purchased for all primary weapons, additional ammunition, stronger ammunition, pain relievers, free climbing, advanced racing skills, harder knife stabs, more stable aiming and leaning functionality. A second innovation is that the compass now also shows opponents in the form of a red dot.
