Tugstein is a settlement ( 540  m above sea level ) with over 15 houses and a large parcel of land in the same place in the Dornbirn district of Oberdorf .

Name and story

Tugstein is a term that occurs several times in Vorarlberg. According to Johann Christoph Adelung's grammatical-critical dictionary of the High German dialect , Tof is the name for “ a chalk-like, very porous type of stone, which resembles a petrified sponge and generally contains many remains of shellfish. In a wider sense, every type of porous stone, even if it is sand-like, is called tof stone ”. Other names are: Tuf , Tufstein , Duft , Duftstein , Tugstein , Tuchsstein , Duckstein . In Latin for Pliny and Vitruvius Tophus or Tofus would be used, in French : Tuf . According to Adelung, Tof seems to be " an old European word which is related to the Latin in the sideline, but does not derive from it ".

The mountain parcel and settlement in Dornbirn has the name of an insignificant tuff window. The settlement has been called "Thaugstein" since 1564. On November 24, 1418, " Hans Völky handed over the Hätzlisberg farm, half of which he had taken over from Hans Ulrich von Ems and half from the widow of Dornbirn, to Brun von Ems (son Ulrich II.). Schattau and Weppach, Farm and estate zu Mühlebach (Kellenbühel) and Hof zu Hätzlisberg (Tugstein) "became the territory of the Hohenems Counts .

Topography, geography, location and traffic

Today Tugstein is in a bend on Bödelestrasse (L 48), about 1200 meters as the crow flies from the center of Dornbirn. The entire district extends on a clear hillside at the foot of the foothills of the Bregenzerwaldgebirge rising towards the Bödele and is thus above the Oberdorf center, which is about 475  m above sea level. A. is located.

Below Tugstein lies the Kellenbühel (this is also where the Brush Castle is located ), above Watzenegg , north of the Rhomberg and south of the Häfenberg . In the " Schematismus für Tirol und Vorarlberg ", 1839, Tugstein is listed as an independent hamlet and part of Dornbirn. Also in the " Provinzial-Handbuch von Tirol und Vorarlberg for the year 1847 ". Tugstein has already grown together with the Kellenbühel to form a uniform settlement area, so that many of the original historical settlement boundaries are hardly recognizable. Today, the geographical determinability is mainly dominated by the street names following the historical settlement limits - Tugstein is the street name of several streets between the Kellenbühel and the beginning of the local area of Watzenegg.

Craft, trade

Tugstein has not developed any significant commercial infrastructure in Dornbirn's municipality. Today the character of a housing estate with partly villa-like buildings dominates. As in almost all of Oberdorf and especially in the hillside districts, the land prices in Tugstein are very high (in 2006, between 350 and 400 euros per square meter were estimated for land on Dornbirn hillside, in 2015 an average of 600 for building land in Dornbirn with "very good living quality") Euros per square meter) and the plots with a view over Dornbirn, the entire Vorarlberg Unterland as well as the Swiss mountains and Lake Constance are very popular.
