Tulipa akamasica is a species of tulip ( Tulipa ) in the lily family (Liliaceae).

features

Tulipa akamasica grows upright. The species reaches heights of growth of 9 to 25, rarely up to 30 centimeters. The bulbs are spherical-oblong and measure 17 to 20, rarely up to 25 × 12 to 18 millimeters. Runners are not formed. The outer onion skins are dark brown to blackish brown and hairless, while the inner ones are lighter brown with a ring of hair around the base plate and a shaggy stripe on the neck. The hair is brownish and usually 2 to 3 millimeters long. The stem is erect, with short, downy whitish hairs, single-flowered, and measures 2 to 2.5 millimeters in diameter at the thickest point. The lower part is green, the upper half has a reddish-brown tint. The subterranean part of the stem is about 6 inches long and whitish. The three to seven leaves are initially channel-shaped and become flatter with age. They are green, slightly blue-green on the underside and have neither hair nor eyelashes. The lower leaves measure 130 to 305 × 4 to 12 (rarely from 3 and up to 16) millimeters, the upper leaves remain shorter and are usually 2 to 3 millimeters wide. They are pointed to pointed and reach about the height of the flower.

The individual flower has a diameter of seldom 60 or more, usually 70 to 75 millimeters, is hairless and opens into a loose star. The bud is straight. The bracts are bright red. On the inside there is a basal black, mostly very irregularly serrated, about 10 to 20 percent of the leaf length occupying spot. This is followed by an approximately 1.5 millimeter wide band, which is yellow on the inside and red on the outside. The lower third of the bracts is often greenish at flowering time. The members of the perianth are slightly different. The outer bracts are obovate-club-shaped, narrowed at the base, 31 to 41 × 10 to 15 millimeters in size and pointed or sometimes blunt. The inner bracts are obovate, narrowed at the base, 33 to 38 (rarely up to 42) × 17 to 19 (rarely from 13 and up to 20) millimeters in size and blunt to more or less pointed. The stamens are longer than the ovary and uneven. The stamens are 6 to 6.5 millimeters long and purple-colored or whitish at the base. Their base is hairy and widened. The anthers are 3.5 to 4 millimeters long and purple in color when they bloom, later they turn brown and often reach a length of 8 to 10 millimeters. The pollen is yellow. The ovary is 8 to 3.5 millimeters in size, almost sessile, hairless and yellow. The three scars are sessile and yellow-white.

The species blooms in March and April and produces fruit in May.

Tulipa akamasica is diploid , the number of chromosomes is 2n = 2x = 24.

Occurrence

Tulipa akamasica is endemic to Cyprus . The species is only known from one location on the Akamas peninsula in the westernmost part of the island. It grows in relatively dense Phrygana over serpentine at an altitude of about 370 meters.
