Twifo / Hemang / Lower Denkyira District (also: Lower Denkyira) is one of 13 districts in the Central Region of Ghana . It was founded in 1988 and borders the districts of Upper Denkyira , Assin North , Assin South , Abura / Asebu / Kwamenkese , Komenda / Edina / Eguafo / Abirem and Cape Coast Municipal in the Central Region. Lower Denkyira also borders the Western Region with its districts Wasa Amenfi East , Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan and Mpohor / Wassa East . Chief Executive of the district with the capital Twifo-Praso and 110,352 inhabitants is Samuel YA Kessie .

The district rises to an altitude between 76 and 91 meters above sea level. With the Pra River and its tributaries Obuo , Bimpong and Ongua , one of the country's most important drainage systems is located in the district. In the district there is a main rainy season in June and October with an average annual rainfall of 1750 mm.

Tropical rainforest is growing almost over the entire district , although it is hardly untouched. The Kakum National Park is one of the most important tourist destinations in the district. Other forest reserves are the Bimpong Forest Reserve , Pra Suhyen Forest Reserve , Minta Forest Reserve and Bunsaben Forest Reserve . All forest protection areas and the Kakum National Park together cover an area of ​​288 km², i.e. 24 percent of the district.

In 1970 there were 53,066 people living in the district, in 1984 already 95,988 and in 2000 there were 107,787 people. Today the annual population growth rate is 2.2 percent, which is significantly higher than the national average of 1.8 percent. The gender distribution in the district has also changed considerably over the past few decades. In 1970 there were statistically 109 men for every 100 women, in 1984 there were about the same number of men as women in the district, in 2000 there were 99 men for every 100 women. In the 1970s, a migratory movement of men looking for work in agriculture in particular led to an increase in the male population.

The total population is distributed over 1,510 settlements. Only Twifo-Praso (11,853 inhabitants) and Hemang (8,240 inhabitants) have a population of over 5,000 and, statistically speaking, have an urban character. 14 percent of the population live in an urban environment. Other larger settlements are Jukwa , Mampong , Wawase , Krobo and Nyenase . All larger settlements are on the important access road between Cape Coast , Twifo-Praso and Dunkwa .

Constituencies

Two constituencies have been established in the Lower Denkyira district. In the constituency of Hemang-Lower Denkyira, Benjamin Bimpong Donkor won his seat in the Ghanaian parliament for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2004 general election. In the constituency of Twifo-Atii Morkwaa, Elisabeth Amoah-Tetteh from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party succeeded in doing this .
