Two Worlds is an action role-playing game from the Polish development studio Reality Pump . It was in Europe on May 9, 2007 by Zuxxez Entertainment released where it initially for Windows - PCs appeared. The Xbox 360 version was released just four months later on August 31, 2007. The publication in North America took place through Zuxxez 'subsidiary TopWare Interactive, Inc. in cooperation with SouthPeak Interactive .

action

The player takes on the role of a nameless young bounty hunter whose sister Kira was kidnapped by a villain named Reist . After months of searching in vain, the hero is contacted by Reist Tungard . For the release of his sister he is supposed to search for five parts of a relic with which the god of war Aziraal can be freed. So the hero gets right in the middle of the power struggle between long-forgotten gods. In the huge world of Antaloor , the hero now has to solve many different tasks that develop his character or serve the main storyline - liberation of the sister.

The search for the five parts of the amulet leads the hero from the glacier areas high in the north to the desert and volcanic areas deep in the south across the world of Antaloor . In the center of the country lies the imperial capital Cathalon on the banks of the river Gon , which runs through Antaloor from the northeast to the southwest. The world is about 60 km² in size (35 km² upper world, 25 km² underworld) and is home to five large cities and more than 50 villages as well as numerous caves and other hidden places.

people

The game world of Two Worlds is populated by a multitude of different beings. These can be grouped into seven peoples .

  • People : The people inhabit the Kingdom of Cathalon with its capital of the same name in the heart of Antaloors. They organize themselves mainly in cities and villages or similar communities. The humans have populated the majority of the game world and thus have a certain supremacy, but they are pushed back by the orcs advancing from the south
  • Dwarfs : The dwarves populate the mountainous north of the game world. The capital of their empire is called Yarmalin. The dwarves are a very mysterious race, not very much is known about them.
  • Serpents : These snake-like creatures live on a peninsula in southwest Antaloors. Much of their empire sank into the sea during the war. The capital of the Serpents is called Ashos and is an important port city and hub of trade, allegedly from there secret connections to sunken temple cities exist. The Serpents worship the god of water and storms Yatholen .
  • Orcs : The Orcs used to be a powerful race, but after the war was lost and their god Aziraal was banished, most of their people were crushed. They lived in many clans all over the south of Antaloro. However, the majority have gathered again in the capital of the orcs - GorGammar. In the meantime the orcs have regained their strength and started a new war.
  • Elves : The elves populate the northwest Antaloors. They live very withdrawn, you hardly notice them. Because of this demarcation, not much is known about them.
  • Groms : The Groms form wild barbarian tribes all over Antaloor and make the area unsafe there. They organize themselves in war camps led by their shamans.
  • Varns : The Varns are a very aggressive people, which is mostly to be found in desert or savannah areas in Antaloor. Varns are half jackal and half human.
  • Monsters : There are also many different monsters that can be found throughout the wilderness of Antaloors. They organize themselves partly in packs, partly they are loners. With each defeated monster, the player finds a useful ingredient for certain potions.

Gameplay

At the beginning of the game you have a level 0 bounty hunter who, however, already has certain fighting skills. These need to be expanded and new ones learned. In the hero's interface you can see the personal development area on the left, in which you can distribute the 5 points you get per level-up in life, strength, skill or willpower. On the right are the various skills where you have to decide in which direction you develop your character (e.g. close-range fighter, long-range fighter, ...). Not all skills are available to upgrade at the beginning. However, the hero can learn these additional skills (combat skills, magic, special tricks, etc.) from teachers in the villages and towns for a fee. What is new here is that there are so-called soul masters in the game who return incorrectly set skill points for a fee. Skill points are obtained for solving quests, for special combat attacks, skillfully opening locks, etc.

Since the skills are independent of each other, the player can develop his character as he likes. Fighting skills of a passive or active type, the use of a bow and arrow, special tricks (snatching a weapon, ...) and assassination as well as five magic directions are to be learned. You learn these in the magic schools of earth magic, fire magic, water magic, air magic and in the secret necromancy.

The game has certain peculiarities. Items such as armor and swords do not appear multiple times in the inventory, but can be stacked. They receive a randomly generated upgrade. Another idea are the so-called "dirty tricks". These "unfair" methods affect the opponent in combat, e.g. B. sand can be put in his eyes. In addition, every action that the hero takes has an effect on the course of the game. For example, some quests cannot be solved if the hero chooses to cooperate with one or the other party.

With the magic system, the hero can put up to three magic cards in an amulet and then cast these spells. This means that the hero collects magic cards from the five magical schools of magic in the course of the game and, after learning, can freely decide which magic card to use for which task. Furthermore, each spell can be upgraded with a maximum of three so-called "boosters" in order to, for example, reduce mana consumption or increase the effectiveness of a spell.

Another special feature is the alchemy system . The player can freely put together up to five different ingredients to make potions or traps.

technology

graphic

No finished graphics engine has been licensed for the graphics of the game . Instead, numerous tools were created especially for the game. For example, the vegetation is created with the help of "TreeGen" . The animations of the game figure and the non-player characters (NPC) were recorded using the motion capture process , among other things . For example, more than 500 non-magical battle scenes were created. Over 600 different weapons and more than 1000 models of armor have been integrated into the game.

music

The approximately 120-minute orchestral soundtrack of the game was composed and recorded by the German composer Harold Faltermeyer . Faltermeyer became world famous for composing the theme music Axel F for the film Beverly Hills Cop .

Speech output

Some well-known dubbing voices were recruited by the publisher for the German voice output . Dietmar Wunder (dubbing voice of e.g. Daniel Craig ) lends his voice to the hero of the game and Martina Treger ( Sharon Stone ) speaks Kyra, the hero's sister. The voices of Ernst Meincke ( Patrick Stewart ), Jürgen Thormann ( Peter O'Toole ), Christian Brückner ( Robert De Niro ) and Lutz Mackensy ( Christopher Lloyd ) can also be heard.

copy protection

The DVD is not protected against copying by a copy protection . Instead, the game must be activated via the Internet or a telephone hotline when it is installed for the first time and whenever a hardware component is replaced.

Add-ons

For Two Worlds there are the add-ons published by the manufacturer , which are only available for the PC version, Tainted Blood (published May 2008) and Curse of the Souls (published May 2009). They each offer new areas, tasks and equipment, but only for the multiplayer mode. Both are part of regular patches and can be downloaded from the game's official site.

reception

Compared to many other current role-playing games, you can only determine the gender of the protagonist with the help of a modification .

Many players did not like the controls on horseback and the balancing was criticized by many as half-baked because it was too difficult at the beginning and too easy at the end. It was also criticized that only a few houses are accessible.

Two Worlds 2

On November 9, 2010, the second part appeared, which was originally announced as an add-on with the title Two Worlds: The Temptation , but was then converted into a full-price title. The action takes place five years after the first Two Worlds . According to the developers, the many criticisms of the first part have been analyzed and attempts have been made to do justice to it through improvements.

Two Worlds 2 sold more than a million copies in its launch month.

In the Looki test , the PC version of Two Worlds 2 achieved a score of 78 percent. The pretty and interesting game world with lots of little adventures and the multiplayer mode were highlighted as positive. Apart from minor errors, the magazine mainly complained about the game world, which cannot be fully explored, and the complications in operation. At Metascore , the PC version of the game achieved a Metascore of 76 and the Xbox 360 version a Metascore of 67.
