Colégio Militar / Luz is a subway station of the Linha Azul of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The station is at the intersection of Avenida do Colégio Militar and Avenida Lusíada in the Lisbon municipality of São Domingos de Benfica . The neighboring stations are Carnide and Alto dos Moinhos ; the station went into operation on October 14, 1988.

history

The Colégio Militar / Luz underground station forms the end of the section from Sete Rios station, which opened in 1988 . The primary goal of this expansion was to better develop the populous district of Benfica and to give it an alternative to the peripheral Linha de Sintra .

The station was designed by the architect António J. Mendes , who was also responsible for the Laranjeiras station . Here, too, he designed two sober 105-meter-long side platforms with a low platform ceiling, and the exits are also unusually in the middle of the platform. The operating company of the metro, which wants to emphasize the artistic value of its stations, invited Manuel Cargaleiro as an artist to design the station. Cargaleiro is particularly known in Portugal for the field of azulejo art and followed with the design of the Maria Keil train station, which designed a large part of the Lisbon metro stations. Cargaleiro chose the theme of the “blue corridors” for the train station. The color blue plays a very strong role in the collective memory of the Portuguese and is strongly linked to public buildings via the azulejos. Hospitals, schools, courts, train stations and other public buildings are often very old and decorated with azulejos. Cargaleiro tried to recreate this familiar atmosphere with its small, square tiles in blue color. Two large tile paintings on the mezzanine, which are supposed to represent “blue landscapes”, complete Cargaleiro's idea.

In 1997, the station got its illustrious neighborhood through the construction of the huge shopping center Centro Colombo , at that time the largest in Portugal and also on the Iberian Peninsula. Apart from the huge rush of shoppers due to the additional new access to the shopping center, there have been no major changes since the station opened. The station is also a regular target of the onslaught through the Estádio da Luz football stadium, which opened in 2003 and is just a few meters away .

There is a sweeping system behind the station, so that during the day every second train instead of going to Amadora Este ends at the Colégio Militar / Luz station. To the south of the train station is a small bus station that serves the buses of the bus companies Carris and Rodoviária de Lisboa .
