The UGMK Arena ( Russian УГМК Арена ) is a multi-purpose hall under construction in the Russian city ​​of Yekaterinburg . The event arena is to be the new home of the ice hockey club Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) and the women's basketball team of UGMK Yekaterinburg ( Superleague ), which has won the Russian championship title in series since 2009. The location is in the city center by the never-completed television tower on the banks of the Isset . On March 24, 2018, the almost 220-meter-high ruin was blown up. Construction began in 1983 and should be 361 meters high. In 1991, the construction work was interrupted by financing problems and never continued.

At the end of July 2018, the city and the metallurgy company UGMK, as the client, agreed on the design by HPP Architects ( Düsseldorf ) from the three proposals still available. According to the plans, the hall will have a translucent facade made of horizontal metal rods and a glass access floor. In addition to ice hockey and basketball, the multifunctional arena is used for other sports such as a. Be prepared for volleyball , handball , futsal , figure skating or boxing as well as major international events and concerts . The interior can be individually adapted by sliding grandstands. The UGMK Arena should offer 12,000 seats for sporting events. There is space for a maximum of 15,000 visitors. Construction work should start at the end of 2018. An opening date was not yet known at the time.

After the preparatory work, on October 31, 2019, in the presence of the Minister of Construction Vladimir Yakushev , the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Oblast , Yevgeny Kuiwaschew, the mayor of the city, Aleksandr Wysokinsky, and the General Director of UGMK AG, Andrei Kozitsyn, and the HPP Senior Partner Gerhard G. Feldmeyer laid the foundation stone for the new multifunctional arena. A time capsule was traditionally walled in. At the same time, a timer with a countdown function was started until the planned opening day on June 30, 2023. The ceremony took place as part of the international conference “100+ Forum Russia”, one of the largest meetings in the Russian construction industry. As the UGMK Arena will be the venue for the Summer Universiade 2023 (August 8-19 ) in Yekaterinburg, the inauguration is planned shortly before this major event.
