Udo Fankhänel (born November 30, 1965 in Stollberg / Erzgeb. ) Is a former German football player. He played for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and FC Carl Zeiss Jena in the Oberliga , the top division of GDR football . Fankhänel, after reunification among other things a licensed player in the 2nd Bundesliga , was in the squad of various selection teams of the GDR Football Association in the 1980s .
Athletic career
Young players and GDR junior selection
In 1972, at the age of six, Fankhänel was accepted into the children's team of the company sports association of the local hard coal works "Karl Liebknecht" in his hometown of Oelsnitz, the BSG activist BMK Oelsnitz . In 1978 the BSG delegated him to the football center of the region, the FC Karl-Marx-Stadt. At FCK he went through the school and youth teams and from 1982 played in the junior team. In this he was discovered in 1983 for the GDR junior national team and played his first junior international match on September 13, 1983. In the encounter between the GDR and Poland (4-1) in the youth competition of friendship in Cuba, the edition of which the GDR team won that year, he was called up as a left defender. By May 1984, when he took part in the U-18 European Championship in the USSR , Fankhänel had a total of 14 international matches with the junior team.
FC Karl-Marx-Stadt
At this point he had already made his first two appearances in the GDR league. He made his first league debut on April 21, 1984 in the FCK game against BSG Chemie Leipzig (2-1) as a left-back. The 1.76 meter tall fanatic usually played in this position for most of his career. For the 1984/85 season he was officially taken over into the FCK's league squad, and during the season he fought for a regular place in the team. He was able to maintain this until 1988, only in the second half of the 1988/89 season he was only used irregularly in different positions or as a substitute.
FC Carl Zeiss Jena
At the beginning of the 1989/90 season, Fankhänel moved to the league rivals FC Carl Zeiss Jena after 101 league games for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt. There, too, he immediately took over his regular position on the left defensive side and was missing until the end of the last East German league season 1990/91 only in three point games. This increased his account of league games to a total of 150. At the end of the 1990/91 season, the Jena team had qualified for the 2nd Bundesliga . Under coach Klaus Schlappner , Fankhänel did not have a fixed position in his first season in the 2nd Bundesliga and fluctuated between defense and midfield, but played 29 of the 32 played point games. He was able to assert himself as a regular player until spring 1994, when an injury forced him to take a longer break. The 1993/94 season ended the FC Carl Zeiss as relegated. In the 1994/95 Regionalliga season, Fankhänel only came back to the team at the beginning of the second half of the season, played right-back ten times in a row under coach Eberhard Vogel , but was then only a substitute in three games.
FC Erzgebirge Aue and end of career
After a total of 171 competitive games for FC Carl Zeiss Jena, Fankhänel moved to the regional division FC Erzgebirge Aue for the 1995/96 season . Mainly used there as a midfielder, he had no problems establishing himself as a regular player. Until his resignation in the summer of 1998, he played 88 of the 102 regional league games played. Fankhänel ended his footballing career as a player- coach with the district league club Concordia Schneeberg and finally ended his career as a footballer there in 2002.
Selective missions in the men's area
Between 1984 and 1988 he played in the GDR youth national team, for which he played 21 international matches and reported one goal. The knockout games of the U-21 European Championship did not reach Fankhänel with the team.
In the mid-1980s, the FCK defender was part of the GDR's Olympic team , with whom he took 3rd place at the Nehru Cup in early 1986 . In the qualifying round for the games in Seoul , he was not used by coach Harro Miller .
