Ulrich Eichhorn (* 1961 in Obernburg am Main ) is a German engineer in the automotive industry , CEO of IAV , former member of the Bentley board, managing director of the VDA and was head of the research and development division at the Volkswagen Group .

Career

Eichhorn studied mechanical engineering and automotive engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt and received his doctorate there in 1992. He is an alumnus of the Harvard Business School and a fellow of the British Institution of Mechanical Engineers IMEchE.

Eichhorn initially worked for Ford in Germany, the USA and Great Britain. As responsible for driving dynamics and overall vehicle (1993–2000) he was involved in the Ford Focus and Puma models. He then moved to Volkswagen AG as Head of Group Research, where he accompanied projects such as the Volkswagen 1-liter car , 24h Speed ​​World Record and SunFuel 2nd generation biofuel .

Eichhorn moved to Bentley in Crewe, England, as Head of Development in 2003 . Projects under his leadership were Bentley Continental Flying Spur and Bentley Continental GTC , Bentley Azure , Bentley Continental GT Speed ​​and Supersports, Bentley Brooklands and the all-new Bentley Mulsanne. He completed his product development at Bentley with the 2nd generation Continental family with a high-performance and high-efficiency 4.0l V8 engine with fuel and CO 2 savings of around 40% compared to the W12.

In January 2012, Eichhorn took over responsibility as managing director of the influential Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) in Berlin under the leadership of the association's president, Matthias Wissmann . During this time he was also a member of the National Platform for Electric Mobility . In 2016 he was appointed to the Federal Government's Ethics Commission for Autonomous Driving by the Federal Minister for Transport and Digital Infrastructure Alexander Dobrindt and in 2018 to the National Platform for Mobility of the Future.

From January 2016, Eichhorn was in charge of the research and development division at Volkswagen AG. As a general representative , he reported directly to CEO Herbert Diess . There he was jointly responsible for restructuring the group in the direction of digitization, electromobility and automated driving and for synergies and efficiency in the brand group.

Since 2019 he has been Chairman of the Management Board of the development service provider IAV with around 7,000 employees at 22 locations and headquarters in Berlin.
