Ulrich Maske (* 1950 in Hanover ) is a German text and music writer , musician , director and producer .

life and work

Ulrich Maske was already artistically active in his youth. In the late 1960s he played free jazz with avant-garde colleagues such as Joachim Kühn and Günter Christmann . He also published poems and journalistic works.

After completing his psychology studies in Hamburg, he started working as a music producer at the publishing house 'pläne' in Dortmund in 1976. ' plans ' specialized in German songwriters and world music and shaped the West German left scene with its publications of left-wing political songs. He produced records for 'plan' with Maria Farantouri , Hannes Wader , Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung , Zupfgeigenhansel , The Sands Family , Abdullah Ibrahim , Baden Powell and other folk and jazz musicians. He produced speech records with Donata Höffer , Klaus Hoffmann , Henning Venske , Susanne Tremper , Hanns Dieter Hüsch , Lutz Görner . Above all, however, he designed and produced the children's song program for 'pläne', in which radio plays, audio books and songs such as "Baggerführer Willibald" by Dieter Süverkrüp and "Anne Kaffeekanne" by Fredrik Vahle were published. In 1990 the children's sound carrier label was sold by 'pläne' to Patmos Verlag in Düsseldorf. Mask then founded Jumbo Neue Medien & Verlag in Hamburg in 1991 together with six other partners .

The program focus of the Jumbo Verlag was initially on the repertoire for children and followed on from the 'plans' tradition. In 1993 Jumbo signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Schallplatte GmbH (DSB) in Berlin, the successor to the former GDR state enterprise Amiga , through which Jumbo took over children's songwriters from the new federal states such as Gerhard Schöne , Reinhard Lakomy and Ulf and Zwulf into the program. Under the motto "Only the best for children!" In addition to recordings by songwriters from the pläne publishing house and the former GDR, European children's folk songs were reinterpreted and arranged for children. The program later became more differentiated. Ulrich Maske initially worked as an author, producer and conceptual consultant in the initially three-person Jumbo team. Today, as program manager, he is responsible for the Jumbo, Goya libre and GoyaLiT programs at Jumbo Verlag, which now has more than 30 employees.

Mask writes books, nursery rhymes, and poems. The musical influences that he processes in his compositions come from world music , jazz , Mediterranean folk and classical music . Ulrich Maske sings his children's songs himself on many productions - often composed and arranged by him from different cultures. He also composes music especially for many audio books from Jumbo Verlag, including the Ink World Trilogy by Cornelia Funke . A selection of Ulrich Maske's instrumentals from various audio books can be heard on the album "Thrill & Chill".
