history

The company's origins go back to 1895 when the publisher Carl Malcomes founded a wholesale and commission business. With the entry of the Leipzig bookseller Gustav Umbreit (* October 6, 1879; † June 2, 1957) as a managing partner, the company was renamed Süddeutsche Grosso-Buchhandlung G. Umbreit & Co in 1912 , followed by Gustav Umbreit's brother-in-law Ernst Bez in 1922 Partner added. When Susanne Bez joined the company in 2011, after Ernst Bez, Max Bez (joined 1957) and Thomas Bez (joined 1976), the fourth generation of the Bez family was active in the management of Umbreit . On January 1, 2019, Solvey Munk and Norbert Udroiu were promoted to the management and now belong to it alongside Susanne Bez and Jürgen Niessen.

For decades the company was based in Stuttgart (Calwer Straße), in 1969 it moved to Maybachstraße in the city center. Due to the steady growth of the company, G. Umbreit GmbH & Co. KG relocated the press wholesale to the green field in Bietigheim-Bissingen north of Stuttgart in 1980 ; in 1987/88 the bar range and the head office followed suit.

In 2009, the company sold the Fleischhauer & Spohn publishing house (founded in Reutlingen in 1830 ), which Gustav Umbreit had acquired in 1918, to the Silberburg publishing house in Tübingen , and in the same year Umbreit took over the Hamburg company Petersen Buchimport GmbH .

The company's own press wholesaling division with sales territory in the north-east of Baden-Württemberg merged with two other press sales companies on May 1, 2015 to form Frankenthaler Pressevertrieb GmbH & Co. KG, based in Frankenthal (Palatinate) .

Since the joint venture of the companies Umbreit and Brockhaus / Commission ( Kornwestheim ) in business Verlagsauslieferung under the umbrella of Brockhaus / Commission on 1 July 2015, focused Umbreit exclusively to the work as a book wholesaler.

Umbreit is a member of the German Book Trade Association .

Fields of activity

The delivery area for the bar range includes Germany , Luxembourg and, since November 2013, Switzerland , too . Umbreit operates its own collection of books . Most of the customers come from the owner-managed and independent book trade, and there is also close cooperation with the book trade cooperative LG Buch ( Munich ). Umbreit has around 400,000 stock titles (books, nonbooks , games and DVDs ) and has been in the directory of available books since 1972 . The own Umbreit title catalog can be integrated into many merchandise management systems via a web interface or local database connection.

Central school book management

Umbreit Buchhandlungen was the first bar assortment to offer the service of central processing of public school book orders: if requested by the ordering bookseller, Umbreit can deliver directly to schools.

Industry software

The BoNus merchandise management system , developed by SoftLevel GmbH ( Zwönitz ) and previously distributed by the company itself, has been offered since 2006 . Two years later Umbreit began to organize regular user meetings in Bietigheim-Bissingen for users. The modular software BoNus Start was developed for bookstores that initially do not want to work with a closed merchandise management system. A web shop solution has been available for the bookstores' websites since 2008 and a download application for audio books and e-books since 2009 .

Digital bar range

The technical basis of Umbreit's digital bar range is the central e-book download platform "ceebo" from Media Control . Umbreit integrates all e-books of the bar range with the titles provided by publishers on "ceebo" in its web shops and ordering applications, so that the sale of e-books by the bookstore with all subsequent business processes in the known processes (granting of discounts, electronic delivery note, etc. ) is integrated between the bookstore and the bar range.
In the area of e-readers, Umbreit cooperates with PocketBook , for which a separate
reader shop has been developed. All wlan-capable PocketBook e-readers purchased through Umbreit are automatically delivered with this shop and connected to the respective bookstore. The bookstore is the sole contractual partner of the end customer for all of Umbreit's e-book offers .

Award

The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs and Caritas awarded the Umbreit bar range the title “Socially committed 2009”.
