The Latin Union is an international organization of different countries in which Romance languages ​​are spoken. Its aim is to promote and maintain the common heritage and diverse identities of the Latin language throughout the Latin world.

history

The Latin Union was founded in Madrid ( Spain ) in 1954 in the form of a constituent agreement. It has existed as a functioning institution since 1983. The headquarters of the Latin Union is in Paris ( France ).

Since the founding of this international organization, the number of member states has increased from 12 to 36, and members can now be found all over the world.

In an extraordinary meeting of the Congress of the Latin Union on January 26, 2012, it was decided to completely close the General Secretariat of the organization on July 31, 2012 and to dismiss the staff. The reason for this is the miserable financial situation of the organization, caused by outstanding membership fees. At the next session of the Congress of the Latin Union, a new Secretary General is to be elected and his tasks redefined.

Linguistic requirements

  • The official language must be derived from a Latin language.
  • The language of education must come from a Latin language.
  • The language of the mass media and of everyday life must come from Latin.

Linguistic and cultural criteria

  • Existence of significant literature in a Romance language.
  • Press and publishing in a Romance language.
  • Television with a strong Romance influence.
  • Radio broadcasts with programs in Romansh.
  • Cultural training in Romance foreign languages.
  • Cooperation with other Romance speaking countries.
  • Social organization based on respect for fundamental freedoms of human rights , democracy , tolerance and religion .

The first four are used as working languages. All texts are translated into these four languages.

The symbol of the Latin Union contains the Catalan name ( Unió Llatina ) since Andorra became a member state, as Catalan is the only official language used.
