Main round
The mode of the preseason was retained. In the main round, each team played twice (first and second leg) against each other. The first five teams reached the championship round, in which each team played once against each other in this round; while the last three teams had to go into the relegation round. There they met the other teams in the round twice. Only the winner of this round managed to stay in the league directly, the two last placed played in relegation games against the winners of the second Bundesliga (relay east and west). The teams in places 1–5 now played in the championship round for the playoff places (place 1–4) in just one game against every other team. The teams in places 5-8 each played twice against the other participants in the round in the relegation round - the two league bottom then played in relegation games against the winners of the playoffs of the 2nd Bundesliga . In both rounds, the points from the main round were taken over. The UHC Sparkasse Weißenfels was already qualified for the championship playoffs after the main round.
