The Union Bank Aktiengesellschaft is a regional private bank based in Flensburg . The company's registered shares with restricted transferability are not listed and are owned by bank customers on both sides of the German - Danish border. The bank is a member of the Federal Association of German Banks and its deposit protection fund .

Business areas

As a universal bank, Union-Bank AG conducts all banking transactions with private, business and corporate customers. Due to the history of the bank (see section “History”), the focus is on customers on both sides of the German-Danish border: There are special products such as B. the so-called border commuter account, which is kept in euros and Danish kroner . This salary account is a domestic account in both Germany and Denmark and is available to employees from Germany who are based in Denmark. This means that exchange rate losses can be excluded when converting currency.

The Danish element is still firmly anchored at Union-Bank AG: all employees are at least bilingual (German / Danish). The “you culture”, the usual form of address in Danish with “you” instead of “you”, is actively lived and applied.

history

Historical development

The origins of today's Union-Bank AG lie in the Spare- og Laanekasse Flensborg og Omegn (in German: Spar- und Leihkasse Flensburg and the surrounding area ) founded on October 9, 1875 at the suggestion of Gustav Johannsen . Johannsen, at that time publisher and editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Flensborg Avis and from 1881 a member of the German Reichstag , recognized at that time that due to the intensive trade relations between the city of Flensburg and the Danish area, there was an increasing need for a "Danish" bank in the region.

The first store of the Spare- og Laanekasse was on the 1st floor of the building at Große Straße 542 (the current building Norderstraße 11-13). The customer base consisted mainly of business people and employees from Flensburg and the surrounding area, but also of people who had their place of residence north of the then German-Danish border.

With the introduction of the German Civil Code , new guidelines for savings banks were issued. Among other things, private savings banks were now also subject to greater public supervision and control. In order to ensure its continued existence as an independent company, the company, like other private savings banks in northern Schleswig, was converted into a GmbH on January 1, 1900 .

Due to the demarcation in 1920, the bank's business area was cut off to the north. In 1923 the name of the Sparkasse was changed to Spare- og Laanekassen GmbH, Flensborg . Two years later, the Flensburger Volksbank , whose clientele, similar to that of the Sparkasse, largely came from the Danish part of the population, had to file for bankruptcy. Thereupon it was decided to convert the Spare- og Laanekasse into a stock corporation in the form that the Spare- og Laanekasse should merge with all assets and liabilities into the newly founded Union-Bank AG . The founding meeting of the Union Bank finally took place on August 28, 1928. Since then, the group of shareholders has consisted of merchants, farmers and private individuals on both sides of the border. The previous Spare- og Laanekasse was formally continued until mid-1929.

Younger story

In mid-2012, Union Bank announced that it wanted to replace its branch in Harrislee with a new building at the same location, as the existing premises no longer meet customer requirements after around 45 years of business operations. In May 2013, the branch was relocated to rented rooms at privy councilor Dr.-Schaedel-Strasse 20 and the demolition of the existing bank building at Süderstrasse 89 began. With the completion of the new building in June 2014, the office was moved back to the old location.

Business area and branches

The business area of Union-Bank AG extends to the northern part of Schleswig-Holstein ( southern Schleswig ) as well as the border area in southern Denmark.

Union-Bank AG currently has a total of four bank locations. In addition to the main office in downtown Flensburg , branches in Harrislee and Schleswig as well as an advisory office with an attached self-service area are operated in Kappeln . All locations are equipped with self-service areas ( ATM , bank statement printer and self-service terminal). The current main building of the Union Bank at Grosse Strasse 2 in Flensburg served as a branch for the Danish National Bank until 1939 .

The branch in Flensburg Südstadt was closed on March 1, 2017.
