The Unione Ticinese Operai Escursionisti (UTOE) was the umbrella organization of the Ticino working class alpine clubs based in Bellinzona . The UTOE sections continue to exist under the Ticino umbrella organization Federazione Alpinistica Ticinese (FAT).

history

A group of friendly workers on the Gotthard Railway , predominantly German-speaking Swiss, founded the Unione Operai Escursionisti Ticinesi (UOET) in 1919 based on the model of Italian “worker alpinism ” in the Volkshaus (“Casa del Popolo”) in Bellinzona , which later became Unione Ticinese Operai Escursionisti (UTOE) was renamed. The UTOE should bring the workers closer to the beauty of the Alps, as well as keeping them away from alcohol and protecting their families from violence. From 1936 the official magazine “Stella Alpina” was published. At that time the UTOE had over 2,000 members.

In 1938, the Lugano (founded 1927), Ritom ( Ambrì , 1924) and Lucomagno ( Olivone , 1931) sections separated from the UTOE and founded the Società Alpinistica Ticinese (SAT). Due to the danger of war, the SAT wanted to give more weight to physical training for club work. The Swiss militia army was dependent on the mountain soldiers gaining alpine experience in their free time. After the Second World War, SAT and UTOE came closer and merged in 1965 under the umbrella organization Federazione Alpinistica Ticinese (FAT).

There are UTOE sections in Locarno (founded in 1934), Biasca (1933), Bellinzona (1919) and Faido (1931). They operate numerous mountain huts in the Ticino Alps . The first hut, the Capanna Gesero , built in 1940 , was inaugurated in November 1946 after it was relocated.
