Universal CityWalk, Hollywood

Universal CityWalk is the name given to the shopping and entertainment centers next to the theme parks of the Universal Parks & Resorts group. The first CityWalk was built as an extension of the group's oldest theme park, Universal Studios Hollywood . The centers act as entrance areas between the amusement park parking lots and their entrances. Additional CityWalks can be found at Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Japan in Osaka .

The CityWalks in Hollywood and Orlando share some tenants, but their architectural styles are fundamentally different. While the CityWalk in Hollywood highlights classic elements of Hollywood, the CityWalk in Orlando has a completely modern design.

history

In May 1993 the first part of the CityWalk was opened. The American architect Jon Jerde designed the area next to an existing cinema. Shortly afterwards, the decision was made to expand the CityWalk for 1 billion US dollars. The architect Jon Jerde was commissioned again, who completed the 8,600 m² extension in 2000. The majority of the extension forms a second floor of restaurants near the cinema.

history

In 1995, Universal Studios Florida announced a $ 2.6 billion expansion to keep up with the nearby Walt Disney World Resort . Part of this expansion of the former Universal Studios Florida to today's Universal Orlando Resort was the plan to build a nearly 50,000 m² shopping and entertainment center. Originally this center should be called "E Zone" (entertainment zone). In 1997 it was decided during the construction phase to rename it "CityWalk Orlando" in order to ensure conformity with the previously opened CityWalk in Hollywood. When the CityWalk finally opened in winter 1998/1999, the size was over 121,000 m².

For the construction of the CityWalk, the existing Universal Studios parking lot was demolished. Today, visitors can park their cars in two multi-storey car parks, from which moving walks take visitors to the CityWalk.
