The Catholic University of Portugal ( port. : Universidade Católica Portuguesa , UCP) was founded in 1971 as a Catholic, public educational institution in Lisbon established. A fundamental consideration was the local separation of research and teaching, which is why further so-called “regional centers” were built. These regional centers are in Lisbon, Porto , Braga and Beiras in the Viseu district . Today there are 18 faculties as well as universities and institutes for education and research.

history

The first considerations to establish a Catholic university in Portugal arose when the teaching staff for philosophy at the St. Pauls School in Panty (Braga) , the center of spiritual education in Portugal was here. This school was founded by the Jesuits who, after a long absence, had resumed teaching in 1875. In 1910 they had to leave Panty again and then returned to school in 1934, their target was shaped by the doctrine of the faith. In the following years they founded the Institute for the Study of Philosophy, which in 1942 was recognized by the Portuguese Ministry of Education and Training as the “University of Philosophy” and in 1947 was elevated to a Pontifical College.

By the papal decree Lusitanorum nobilissima gens of October 13, 1967, the institute was transformed into the "Faculty of Philosophy at the Portuguese Catholic University", which was moved to Lisbon in the same year and handed over to the Portuguese Bishops' Conference . The Faculty of Theology was established there in 1968 and Human Sciences in 1971.

It received state recognition as a university in connection with a concordat , it was now an equal and equal university for the state and the Roman Catholic Church. In the years that followed, the university developed into a public and ecclesiastical institution with many courses and specialist areas. The entire training of academic and scientific students is based on the principles and values of Christian teaching. Today the university enjoys a high degree of autonomy and has achieved the reputation of an “elite university”.
