NCO School (NVA)
NCO schools of the National People's Army (NVA) of the GDR were military teaching facilities for training team ranks for service as NCOs . The equivalent training for the People's Navy took place at the fleet school.
Foundation and development
NVA teaching facilities, known as non-commissioned schools, have been created since 1969 as part of the ongoing reorganization of training and further education for non-commissioned officers in accordance with the special requirements in the east of divided Germany. With them the previous forms of training for NCOs, which had been created since the founding of the NVA, were centralized. In addition to the Land Forces NCO schools , there was also the People's Navy School , the Air Force NCO / Air Defense “Harry Kuhn” and the “Erich Habersaath” military technical school (1969–1979 Technical NCO).
In the following years there were further restructuring, amalgamation and name changes. At the time of the dissolution of the NVA in 1990 there were the following central NCO schools:
- Military technical school of the land forces "Erich Habersaath" in Prora
- "Walter Steffens" fleet school in Parow
- Military technical school of the air forces / air defense "Harry Kuhn" in Bad Düben
education
The NVA non - commissioned officers' schools trained so-called non - commissioned officers (OR-4 to OR-5) and professional non - commissioned officers (OR-6 to OR-8) as lower commanders and technical specialists in four-and-a-half to twelve-month courses in troop- related training and carried out advanced training courses. The educational requirements were the secondary school leaving certificate or a comparable educational qualification and completed vocational training. The necessary military, military-technical and pedagogical-methodical knowledge and skills for later use were imparted. Compulsory political education was an integral part of the training.

Distinction badge
The participants in a non-commissioned officer course carried the rank of non-commissioned officer student (Uffz. Student, or US) based on the rank designation for officer students at the officers' colleges of the GDR .
NCO students wore special rank insignia and the sleeve mark for temporary soldiers on the right lower sleeve of their uniform jacket and coat (Volksmarine left upper sleeve).
In addition to the special rank insignia in the form of epaulettes, soldiers on time (SaZ) or non-commissioned officers (UaZ) as well as long-term non-commissioned officers or professional non-commissioned officers (BU) of the NVA wore general badges of distinction. These were NCO braids on the collar of the uniform jacket and NCO brackets on the lower sleeves of the jacket and coat. For soldiers of the land forces and air forces / air defense, the angles were made of aluminum / silver, and for soldiers of the People's Navy, these were made of gold-colored NCO braid .
