On the way is the fourth live album of the German songwriter Reinhard Mey . It was published by Intercord in 1978 . The album title anticipates the name of the song Unterwegs , which Mey released on his studio album Jahreszeiten in 1980 .

The album contains almost all of the songs previously released on the studio albums Ikarus (1975) and Menschenjunges (1977). With Au-dessus des nuages , the French version of Above the Clouds , a song from 1974 is also represented. The album is rounded off by the songs Daddy Blue (ascent and descent of the “before” photo model Detlef Klenken) and Alles ist gut , which were released as a single in the same year and released in 1979 on the album Kein Ruhe Minute .
Thematically, this results in an arc of tension in the travel theme, which the album title specifies and which Mey occupied for decades when he thinks back to his first years as a songwriter. This also includes his variant Whom God Wants to Show the Right Favor , the text of which is the only one printed in the album. Reinhard Mey wrote text and music for all the songs. They were published by Chanson Edition Reinhard Mey. The album was created during Reinhard Mey's "Germany-Austria-Switzerland" tour in 1977, which went through 72 cities and was directed by Peter Graumann. Walther Richter took over the production and, together with Klaus Krüger, the sound recording and mixing. Klaus Kunzendorf took care of the stage technology . The photos on the LP cover are from Peter Graumann as well as Hella and Reinhard Mey. The cover design was done by Gerhard Ehrle. The front shows Mey in front of a front door with the number 63, two suitcases are in front of it, two guitar cases are leaning against the wall. The photo on the back shows the closed door, newspapers and mail clogging the mailbox, milk, eggs and yoghurt are on the step.
