Václav Halama , also Wenzel Halama (born November 4, 1940 in Jablonec nad Nisou , Sudetenland , † June 8, 2017 ), was a Czechoslovak football player and coach . He became Austrian champion in 1984 with FK Austria Wien .
Player career
Halama spent a large part of his playing career at LIAZ Jablonec , in 1964 he was promoted to the 2nd Czechoslovak League with the club. He also played for FK Dukla Prague and FC Uster in Switzerland.
Coaching career
Halama began in the early 1970s as a player-coach for the second team of LIAZ Jablonec, which was then playing in the fourth division. From 1974 to 1976 he coached the first team in Jablonec. Halama then emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany and settled in Cologne , where he also graduated from the renowned sports university.
In Germany he was assistant coach at FC Augsburg under Max Merkel , at the beginning of the 1978/79 season Halama was briefly coach at the Oberbergischen A-Kreisligisten RS 19 Waldbröl. In 1978 he became head coach at the Grazer AK and in 1981 won the Austrian Cup with the Graz team . After this success he returned to Germany and took over TSV 1860 Munich in the 2nd Bundesliga with players like Rudi Völler , Herbert Waas and Wolfgang Sidka . But in April 1982 he left Munich again and became a coach at Austria Wien , where he celebrated his greatest successes. Under Halama, the team reached the semi-finals in the 1982/83 European Cup Winners' Cup and, after having eliminated FC Barcelona , they were only eliminated from Real Madrid . In 1984, Halama became Austrian champions with the Viennese. Nevertheless, Halama left the club and accepted an offer from Greece to coach AEK Athens . There he was released after ten matchdays after a defeat in the local derby against the reigning champions Panathinaikos Athens (2: 3 on November 25, 1984) and returned to the former employer TSV 1860 in Munich at the end of November 1984 . The Lions were now playing in the Bayern League , Halama was unsuccessful. He then coached FC Locarno (1987/88) and again the GAK (1988/89).
further activities
After his coaching activity, Halama worked as a player's advisor (including Miroslav Baranek , Martin Frýdek , Pavel Hapal , Miroslav Kadlec and Radoslav Látal ). He worked as a European manager for Sigma Olmütz and as a consultant for Eastern Europe for the sports marketing company UFA Sports and the sports rights marketer Sportfive .
