Birds Die in Peru (Original title: Les oiseaux vont mourir au Pérou ) is a French drama from 1968 directed by Romain Gary , who also wrote the screenplay. This is based on his own short story of the same name. The leading roles are cast with Jean Seberg , Maurice Ronet , Pierre Brasseur and Jean-Pierre Kalfon . The film was first shown in theaters on June 20, 1968 in France. It had its premiere in the Federal Republic of Germany on August 22, 1968.
action
The focus of the film is the somewhat boyish and almost angelic looking Adriana. She is on a trip around the world with her rich, several years older husband and chauffeur. In Peru they celebrate Carnival. After an erotic experience with several men hidden behind carnival masks on the beach early in the morning, Adriana realizes again what she calls her "incurable disease", namely her nymphomania . Although the sorrow of this disposition is written on her face, her next stop is Madame Fernande's brothel , where she not only hides from her husband who is looking for her, but also gives in to her passion again.
Adriana once agreed with her husband's chauffeur that he should kill her if her disposition became unbearable, and now the time has come. But Adriana doesn't even want to wait for the redeeming shot; she goes into the water. At the last second she is saved from the worst by the mad writer Rainier. This assures her of his love and declares that he no longer wants to leave her.
The chauffeur, the personified cynicism , prepares to kill not only Adriana, but also her husband, who believes he cannot go on without his wife, but is killed at the same moment by a jealous Indian himself. The man of letters now takes the position of chauffeur. Adriana's life won't change.
Reviews
The Protestant Film Observer summarizes his criticism as follows: “Attempt to characterize the mental state of a nymphomaniac. The characters in the film are not as profound and convincing as one would expect from such a thematically and formally ambitious film. The unusual and the pose dominate. Pictures appropriate to the atmosphere and considerable performance make up for some shortcomings. For adults. "
The lexicon of international film comes to a similar assessment: “The first film by the French writer Romain Gary, which does not primarily illuminate the sensitive topic as a clinical case, but rather relates women and their disposition to the environment, but omits any ethical evaluation . The well-photographed and played film suffers from its overly clear symbolism. "
