VDI Society for Vehicle and Traffic Technology
The VDI-Gesellschaft Fahrzeug- und Verkehrstechnik (FVT) is a specialist society in the Association of German Engineers (VDI) that has existed since 1934 . The FVT offers engineers from the fields of automotive engineering , railway engineering , aerospace engineering as well as shipbuilding and ship engineering a professional home. The network of members comprises around 27,000 of around 150,000 VDI members and is supported regionally by the 45 VDI district associations. The headquarters of the FVT is the VDI house in Düsseldorf .
history
The upswing in the automotive industry in Germany began at the beginning of the 20th century . This made it necessary to create and maintain an effective exchange of technical experience and scientific knowledge among specialist engineers in the automotive industry . As a result, the Automobiltechnische Gesellschaft (ATG) was founded in Berlin on March 17, 1904. The proposed name "Association of German Automobile Engineers" was discarded in order not to be confused with the VDI. A few days later, on March 31, 1904, the magazine “Der Motorwagen”, which had existed since 1898, became the official organ of the association. On July 1, 1929, "Der Motorwagen", "Auto-Technik" and "Mitteilungen des Reichsverband der Automobilindustrie" merged to form the "Automobiltechnische Zeitschrift (ATZ)", which is still the official organ of the association with an annual special edition of the FVT. At the request of the Reichsbund Technischer Arbeit (RTA), which advocated the amalgamation of technical associations, on October 1, 1934, the automotive engineering company was incorporated into the VDI as a working group for automotive engineering.
With the dissolution of the association on November 22, 1945 on the basis of the Control Council Act No. 2 of October 10, 1945, enacted by the Allied Control Council , the technical work of the association also ended when the VDI became a member of the NS-Bund Deutscher Technik . After approval by the military government, the VDI was re-established on September 12, 1946 in the British Zone and finally in September 1949 for the entire area of the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin . As early as 1947, the work on the content was resumed in the VDI's Automotive Technology Working Group.
Renaming took place in 1956 in VDI vehicle technology specialist group, in 1974 in VDI-Gesellschaft Fahrzeugtechnik and in 1993, after the decision to expand to all modes of transport, in today's name VDI-Gesellschaft Fahrzeug- und Verkehrstechnik.
Content focus
Until 1993, FVT and its predecessor companies dealt exclusively with road vehicles , with the exception of agricultural vehicles . The main focus of work was B. in 1974 passenger cars , commercial vehicles , future means of transport, safety issues and developments in body and chassis construction as well as in engine construction . After two unsuccessful attempts in 1908 and 1951 to establish aviation technology as a field of work, this only succeeded permanently from 1993 with the expansion of the subject area to include the modes of transport aerospace technology, shipbuilding and ship technology as well as rail technology.
Today (as of February 2019) the FVT is divided into eight departments.
The state of the art in the field of vehicle technology is recorded in the form of VDI guidelines in the VDI Vehicle Technology Manual, which is published by the FVT.
Membership in the International Organization of Automotive Engineers
Via the FVT, the VDI has been an active member of the International Organization of Automotive Engineers (FISITA) since 1952 . FISITA was founded in Paris in 1948, is the international umbrella organization of automotive engineering associations, brings together members from 37 countries and thus represents more than 210,000 automotive engineers worldwide. The FVT represents the interests of German engineers in the FISITA committees. The following FISITA World Automotive congresses took place in Germany with the support of FVT:
- 5th FISITA Congress, 1954, Munich
- 11th FISITA Congress, 1966, Munich
- 18th FISITA Congress, 1980, Hamburg
- 32nd FISITA Congress, 2008, Munich
Youth activities
Formula Student Germany

The Association of German Engineers, represented by FVT, has been the ideal sponsor of Formula Student Germany (FSG) since it was founded in 2006. FSG is an annual, international design competition for students.
Carolo Cup
The Carolo-Cup is an international university competition for autonomous driving model vehicles on a scale of 1:10 that has been held annually since 2008. The Cup is organized by the Technical University of Braunschweig under the patronage of VDE and VDI, the latter represented by FVT.
Honors
