Verbandsgemeinde Rhein-Mosel
On July 1, 2014, the Lower Mosel community merged with the Rhens community to form the new Rhine-Mosel community . The main administrative seat is in Kobern-Gondorf , with a branch in Rhens . The new community is the second largest in the Mayen-Koblenz district with around 27,000 inhabitants.
The reason for the merger was the municipal and administrative reform of September 2010, which provides for the dissolution of association communities with less than 12,000 inhabitants. Since the municipality of Rhens, with its population of less than 9,000, was affected, merger talks were initiated with the municipality of Untermosel in order to forestall a forced merger and to be able to claim funding from the state.
