It supports the university in its tasks and has sections within its organization that provide targeted support to the individual departments. The FABU was run under the name Society of Friends of the Bergische University (GFBU) until 2015 .

The association has made a decisive contribution to the history and development of the Bergische Universität by initiating the university concerts , setting up the guest house and meeting center on Freudenberg, and the UniTal academic lecture series .

history

The friends' association was founded on June 5, 1973, just under a year after the establishment of the then comprehensive university. Well-known entrepreneurs such as Erich Mittelsten Scheid , Hellmut Girardet and Heino Ahr belonged to the founding group . In May 1975 the association already had 175 members and equity of almost 36,000 marks . In 1977 GFBU funds totaling 12,000 marks made it possible to build the university kindergarten. In 1978 a simultaneous translation system was purchased for 67,000 marks. In 1980 Ingrid Henkels took over the chairmanship from Erich Mittelsten Scheid, the new treasurer Hans H. Asmus established a wealth of over 190,000 marks. Before the ninth regular general meeting , 10,000 flyers were distributed for advertising purposes, the association had 270 members at that time. In 1985, Rector Josef M. Häußling initiated the series of UNI KONZERTE , which was further supported two years later with the purchase of a concert grand .

In 1991, the entrepreneur Johannes Dinnebier became the 500th member of the friends' association; in the meantime, between 70,000 and 144,000 marks in funds could be awarded annually. The Friends of University Sports and Sports Science was founded as a section of GFBU in 1992 . In 1994, at the suggestion of Erich Hödl and Walter Blum, the former officers' mess of the Generaloberst-Hoepner-Kaserne - today's Freudenberg campus - was converted into a guest house and meeting center with generous funding; two years later there are already almost 250,000 in the donor account set up especially for this project Mark received. In 2000 the two new sections, the Friends of Machine Technology and the Friends of Evangelical Theology, were founded, followed by the Friends of Economics the following year . The number of members was now 635. In 2003, 24 university projects were funded with over 54,000 euros, part of which went to the Zollverein School of Management and Design in Essen . In 2004, the Remscheid entrepreneur and Vaillant managing director Karl-Ernst Vaillant took over the chairmanship of the association. 27 university projects were funded with almost 57,000 euros, including a project by the printing and media technology department for the Düsseldorf trade fair drupa .

In 2006 Johannes Köbberling was elected as the new chairman. In 2007, the GFBU, in cooperation with the Westdeutsche Zeitung , held the UniTal lecture series for the first time in the Elberfeld City Church , at which various professors gave lectures on their subject areas. In 2008, the international university project Environmental Ecology , the 15th Wuppertal Linguistic Forum and a Goethe Evening were funded. In 2009, a study trip to Auschwitz and an excursion to Weimar were also financed. In 2010, 24 university projects, some of them supraregional, were funded. In 2012, the establishment of the university arboretum , an approximately 1 km long tree- learning path, was supported.

In 2015 it was decided to expand the profile of the association across disciplines to include students, relatives, alumni and partners. In the course of this, the Society of Friends of the Bergische University was renamed the Association of Friends and Alumni of the Bergische University (FABU).

Ulrich Jaeger , Managing Director of WSW mobil GmbH , will replace Köbberling as CEO in 2018.
