Venne "Verner" Järvinen (born March 4, 1870 in Juupajoki , Pirkanmaa ; † January 31, 1941 in Tampere ) was a Finnish athlete who competed in several throwing disciplines, but whose real strength lay in the discus throw .

At the Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens in 1906 , he competed in the shot put , stone throwing , discus throw and javelin throw . Järvinen did not finish in the top six in the shot put and stone throwing. He was fifth in the javelin throw. In the discus throw, he took third place with 36.82 meters.

A Greek-style discus throwing competition was also held in Athens . In this contest, the disc was thrown from a bump with a swing to mimic the technique inherited in the famous statue of Diskobolos by ancient sculptor Myron . Verner Järvinen won this competition in the Greek style with 35.17 meters ahead of the Greek Nikolaos Georgandas with 32.80 meters.

At the Olympic Games in London in 1908 , Järvinen reached the final neither in the shot put nor in the javelin throw. In the discus throw he was fourth with 39.43 meters. The Greek-style discus throwing was also held in London and Järvinen took third place with 36.48 meters behind the Americans Martin Sheridan (38.00 meters) and Bill Horr (37.32 meters).

Four years later, at the age of 42, Järvinen competed again in the 1912 Olympic Games . In Stockholm he was 15th in the discus throw and in the two-handed discus throw - one throw with the right arm and one throw with the left arm were added - he was twelfth.

Verner Järvinen's three sons were also Finnish Olympians. Kaarlo Järvinen (1903-1941) was eighth in the shot put in 1932 . Akilles Järvinen (1905-1943) won silver in the decathlon in 1928 and 1932 . The youngest of the three brothers, Matti Järvinen (1909–1985), was the most successful. He won gold in the javelin throw in 1932 and is one of the best javelin throwers ever.
