The Vienna Nightrow is an international rowing sprint regatta of the First Vienna Rowing Club LIA for steered eights that has been taking place annually in Vienna ( Austria ) since 2011 .

A team of former active players, coaches, club officials, referees and officials of the Austrian Rowing Association had set themselves the goal of offering a new and attractive competition format in this sport in order to increase media attention for rowing in Austria. The “Vienna Nightrow” is a rowing regatta that has been held annually since 2011 on a 350 m sprint route on the Old Danube and since 2015 on the New Danube in Vienna . The preliminaries of the regatta begin in the late afternoon and move on to the floodlit finals in the evening . In addition to the aft, company races in controlled quad sculls or in dragon boats (in 2015) are also held.

Events

The regatta “Vienna Nightrow” took place on Saturday, July 2nd, 2011 for the first time. 19 eights from Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as four company teams in a controlled quad scull were at the start. In the following year, 2012, the regatta took place on Saturday, June 30, 2012, with 32 eights from Great Britain, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and Austria. In addition, 14 company teams started in a controlled quad scull. The second event was accompanied by a live broadcast on ORF Radio Wien with Hademar Bankhofer or in KroneHit, as well as an ORF sports report.

On Saturday, June 29, 2013, the regatta took place for the third time. 37 eights from Belgium, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria and twelve company teams in a controlled quad scull were at the start. For the first time, a cooperation between the “Vienna Nightrow” and the University of Vienna was carried out, which in 2015 would like to organize a university rowing regatta in Vienna for its 650th anniversary. The start of this project was the “Vienna Nightrow” in 2013, to which teams from European universities were invited in addition to the club members. The third event was accompanied by a photo shoot in the worldwide Red Bulletin magazine and with articles in the Uni: View magazine of the University of Vienna, the Neuss-Grevenbroicher Zeitung , in the ORF -Sport-Bild and on ORF SPORT + .

“Vienna Nightrow 2014” took place on Saturday, June 28, 2014. A total of 47 eights from Australia, Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Croatia, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary were at the start. In addition to the aft, twelve company / celebrity teams also took part in the regatta in a controlled quad scull. Among the participants were Serge Falck , Fabienne Nadarajah , Mirna Jukić and Christian Clerici . The cooperation with the University of Vienna was continued in 2014 and so there was a separate university race with a total of 6 eights, which also included the University of Cambridge .

In 2015, the “Vienna Nightrow” took place on Saturday, June 27, 2015, with the University of Vienna and “Vienna Nightrow” organizing their own university rowing regatta the day before, on Friday, June 26, 2015 on the occasion of its 650th anniversary international universities were invited. A total of 48 eights from Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Croatia, Austria, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey and Hungary were at the start.

“Vienna Nightrow 2016” will take place on Saturday, June 25, 2016.
