Friedrich Viktor Strauss , from 1852 von Strauss , from 1872 von Strauss and Torney (born September 18, 1809 in Bückeburg , Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe , today Lower Saxony , † April 1, 1899 in Dresden ) was the princely schaumburg-Lippe minister , hymn poet and honorary citizen of the city of Dresden.

Life

He came from an old Hanoverian family, which is first mentioned in a document with the pastor Georg Burchard Strauss (around 1584–1632) in Rethmar, near Lehrte in Hanover.

Strauss married Albertine von Torney on June 12, 1832 in Bückeburg (born March 12, 1814 at Gut Hedern, Böhme , Lower Saxony; † March 13, 1905 in Bückeburg), the last of her noble family from Lower Saxony and daughter of the captain of the royal British and electoral Hanover Captain Christian David von Torney, landlord on Hedern, and Henriette von Honstedt. From this marriage the sons Albert (1833-1896), Lothar (1835-1903) and Hugo (1837-1919) as well as the daughter Hedwig von Schreibershofen (1840-1922), who became famous as a writer, come from. Viktor von Strauss and Torney is the grandfather of the writer Lulu von Strauss and Torney .

Strauss and his children were raised to the Austrian nobility on June 2, 1852 with a diploma of August 20, 1852 in Vienna and, with his sons Albert and Lothar, received the princely schaumburg-Lippe approval for the association of names and coats of arms in Bückeburg on May 15, 1872 with that of the Torney family . His son Hugo had already received the corresponding Prussian permit on February 19, 1872 in Berlin. Von Strauss and Torney died in Dresden in 1899, but was buried in his hometown of Bückeburg.

Strauss was the princely ambassador and minister of Schaumburg-Lippe . He was also D. theol. of the University of Leipzig , schaumburg-Lippe real privy councilor and honorary citizen of the city of Dresden. Eventually he gained fame as a religious historian , poet and translator .

In 1870 he was the first to translate the Tao Te King from Chinese into German. Its translation is still in use today, it was reprinted in 1959 by Manesse Verlag and was published there in its 11th edition in 2004. His translation of Shijing (Book of Songs) from 1880 was the first complete translation of this oldest Chinese collection of poems from Chinese into German.

Two of his hymns in particular are still known and sung: The beautiful ornament of the year escapes (at the end of the church year) and Lord, two appear before your face (for the wedding).

During his studies he became a member of the Arminia Erlangen fraternity in 1827 . Strauss also wrote the federal song of the Wingolfsbund in 1867 ; in 1856 he had already become an honorary member of the Erlanger Wingolfs .

His written estate is in the Bückeburg State Archives .
