Athletic career

In the summer of 1962, Volker Franke was appointed to the squad of the GDR junior national team as a player in the SC Rotation Leipzig . From September 1962 to March 1963 Franke was used in five international matches, in which he always played as a striker and scored a goal in two games. When the supposedly best Leipzig players were brought together in the soccer section of the newly founded SC Leipzig for the 1963/64 season, 18-year-old Volker Franke was also part of the extended squad of the league team. But he was first used in the reserve team, with which he won the championship of the Oberligareserve teams at the end of the season. In the Oberliga he came on the 24th matchday in the encounter ASK Vorwärts Berlin - SC Leipzig (0: 2) for the first time. Instead of the regular Dieter Fischer , he played on the left side of the storm and justified his commitment with the goal of the 1-0 lead. Franke was called up in the last two league games and scored another goal on his second appearance. The SC Leipzig closed the season with the final of the GDR soccer cup . In the 2-3 defeat against SC Aufbau Magdeburg, Franke again worked as a half-left striker. Coach Rudolf Krause held on to his tall striker Franke at the beginning of the 1964/65 season and made him play in three league games as a replacement for the failed standard attacker Konrad Schaller . Although Franke scored a goal in the first use, he then only played in the reserve team. Only at the end of the season did Krause Franke play in the two finals of the International Football Cup (IFC) against Polonia Bytom . The Polish team won the cup after a 3-0 defeat in Leipzig and a 5-1 home win. Volker Franke only raised a lot through his own goal in the second leg. For the 1965/66 season Franke appeared under the new coach Günter Konzack for the first time officially in the league squad. Between the 8th and 26th match day Franke played ten league games and with his eight goals he became one of the most successful strikers in Leipzig, who appeared under the new formation of 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig during the season. In 1966, 1. FC Lok reached the IFC final and won the cup after a 0-1 away defeat and a 4-0 in Leipzig against IFK Norrköping. Franke played in both games and contributed a goal to the cup success.

The two IFC games were Franke's last appearance for 1. FC Lok Leipzig. For the 1966/67 season he moved to the top division competitor Wismut Aue. After only three league appearances and without a goal he left the Erzgebirge town of Aue after a year. He returned to Leipzig and joined the locomotive rival Chemie Leipzig. But even there he was only used in the first three league games without a goal. Then his league career was over.

During the 1968/69 season, Volker Franke appeared at the second-rate GDR league club FSV Lokomotive Dresden . He stayed there for eight years and was part of the regular eleven. In his seven seasons in Dresden , a total of 176 games were completed in the GDR league, of which Franke played 156. His coaches could use him flexibly, and so he played everything from attacking to defending. He was one of the goalscorers every season and ultimately scored 43 goals. In his last season 1974/75, in which he turned 30, he was used again mainly as a striker and came in 17 of 22 league games on four goals.
