Volodymyr Wijtyschyn ( Ukrainian Володимир Війтишин ; born November 9, 1959 in Demydiwka , Ukrainian SSR ) is the incumbent archbishop and metropolitan of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Archepary Ivano-Frankivsk in Ukraine .

Life

Volodymyr Wijtyschyn passed his high school diploma and began his studies at a secret seminary . From 1978 to 1988 he completed his military service and then continued his priestly training. Wijtyschyn was on 27 May 1982 by the "Secret Bishop of the Ukraine" and later auxiliary bishop in Ivano-Frankivsk Pavlo Wasylyk for priests ordained. Then he worked in the church underground as a pastor in the Diocese of Ivano-Frankivsk .

Since 1987 he has been a member of the initiative to legalize the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, led by Bishop Pavlo Vassylyk. He was a member of the delegation of the initiative that brought the then President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev , on May 16, 1989 , the application to legalize the Catholic Church in Ukraine. After regaining religious freedom in Ukraine, Wijtyschyn continued his theology studies first in Ivano-Frankivsk and then at the Catholic University of Lublin (Poland). In 2002 he received his licentiate in pastoral theology .

On May 13th, 2002 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Kolomyia-Chernivtsi by Pope John Paul II and on December 12th, 2004 he succeeded the deceased diocesan bishop Pavlo Wassylyk in the episcopate of Kolomyia-Chernivtsi. On July 15, 2003, he had already been ordained bishop by Major Archbishop Ljubomyr Cardinal Husar . Bishops Pavlo Wasylyk of Kolomyia-Chernivtsi and his predecessor in the episcopate of Ivano-Frankivsk assisted Sofron Stefan Mudry OSBM as co-consecrators .

His appointment as Bishop of Ivano-Frankivsk took place on June 2, 2005, the inauguration was carried out on July 12, 2005 with a solemn high mass. With the elevation of the Ivano-Frankivsk eparchy to the archparchy on November 21, 2011, he was appointed archbishop, the inauguration of the current Metropolitan took place on December 13, 2011.

Founding of a monastery

Under the patronage and at the express request of Bishop Wijtyschyn, the Matará sisters established their first branch in the Ukraine in Burshtyn in 2010 . The building in Burshtyn was a former orphanage , which had been built by the Metropolitan of Lviv Andrej Scheptyzkyj OSBM and was confiscated during the Soviet rule and used as a hospital.

Ukrainian Order of Merit 3rd Class

The President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko awarded him the " Ukrainian Order of Merit of the 3rd Class" on December 9, 2009, in "recognition of his contribution to the implementation of social programs and for his active charity and charity ".
