Volquart Pauls

Volquart Pauls (born January 23, 1884 in Kating ; † May 9, 1954 in Kiel ) was a German historian who mainly dealt with the history of Schleswig-Holstein .

After working as a grammar school teacher from 1909, Volquart Pauls became a state librarian in 1919 and in this function the director of the Schleswig-Holstein State Library in Kiel (he officially had this title from 1940 to 1948). From 1921 he was secretary of the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History, which he remained until 1951. In addition, he was honorary professor for Schleswig-Holstein history at the University of Kiel from 1939 to 1948 .

Pauls mainly dealt with the history of Schleswig-Holstein in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. He was editor of the " Journal of the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History " and the "Sources and Editions on the History of Schleswig-Holstein". In 1924 and 1932 Pauls published volumes 4 and 5 of the “ Schleswig-Holstein-Lauenburgische Regesten und Urkunden ” on behalf of the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives . Together with Otto Scheel , he was the initiator of the multi-volume “Geschichte Schleswig-Holstein” (from 1933), which was revised and edited by Olaf Klose from 1957 in the Wachholtz Verlag (Neumünster). In 1955, the founding history of the University of Kiel was published from the estate by his academic teacher Carl Rodenberg .
