Von Thronstahl was a German Neofolk band that was founded in 1995 by Josef Maria Klumb and dissolved in 2010.

Band history

The basic idea for Von Thronstahl was conceived around 1995, when Klumb was still playing in Forthcoming Fire . He was looking for a way of expressing European identity. While Forthcoming Fire was a dark wave band, some of the other members had different musical backgrounds than Klumb. Their first 10 " Sturmzeit was released in 1998, their debut album Imperium internum in 2000 ; the aesthetic of the album remained formative for the band. Themes of the album were medieval Europe and the Arthurian legend of the Holy Grail . At the end of 2008 Von Thronstahl covered the song The Saints are Coming , for 30th anniversary of the Scottish punk band The Skids, admired by Klumb . Klumb sings in a duet with a singer and a music video was produced for it. In April 2009, the fifth album was released, entitled Germanium metallicum . In the summer of 2011, Klumb released on On the band's homepage an article announcing the dissolution of Von Thronstahl. Klumb does not give an exact date of the dissolution, but mentions a failed concert on August 1st, 2010, which he describes as the last action of the band. to disband the band.

Style and content

The genre of music cannot be clearly defined, as the spectrum of music ranges from industrial rock and martial industrial to neo-classical and neo- folk. The individual albums differ greatly. The album Sacrificare , for example, was much quieter and more guitar-heavy than its predecessor Bellum, sacrum bellum !? .

What is also noticeable about the group's concept is that all album releases are exclusively given Latin titles. The text layout is also not purely in German, there are also parts of the text in English , Latin and Italian . Klumb and Raymond Plummer are both strongly influenced by traditional Catholicism and, according to Klumb, Catholics who are also concerned with paganism ; According to him, ancient Christianity is full of influences from the time of paganism, which many modern Christians are not clear about.

Right-wing extremism allegations

The fact that the group openly professes nationalistic ideas, uses Nazi aesthetics and martial song titles such as Heimaterde, Mutterboden, Vaterland or Das neue Reich leads to controversy . The bundles of rods ( fasces ) , which became known as the symbol of Italian fascism , are also used. Fasci badges were sold on the band's website as a "[d] eccentric little sentiment," as was Canzoniere fascista . The group also uses language samples , e.g. the right-wing conservative pastor Hans Milch or the right-wing extremist Horst Mahler, as a stylistic device, and published songs on tribute albums for Corneliu Zelea Codreanu , Leni Riefenstahl and Julius Evola , on which right-wing extremists were clearly represented, as well as the compilation Precent! - Compilație de muzică nationalistă of the Romanian right-wing extremist organization Noua Dreaptă by Claudiu Mihuțiu .

Although the group is therefore deliberately kept quiet by many relevant press organs of the black scene , it has achieved a high level of popularity, especially in Eastern Europe (especially in Russia) and Italy. Von Thronstahl is successful in Germany, but polarized because of the right-wing extremism allegations against her . The appearance at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2000 was forbidden by the city of Leipzig because of Klumb's participation. Nonetheless, the group entered the stage without their front man and stood there in protest with spades and sun-wheel flags , while the music was played by the tape.

In a Spiegel article from February 16, 2009, which deals with the connection between Catholicism and right-wing extremism, Von Thronstahl is counted by the two authors as one of the musical pioneers of this movement. They continue to refer to the admiration that Hans Milch received on the part of Klumb, who converted to Catholicism after a personal conversation with the suspended pastor of Limburg an der Lahn . Hans Milch was not a member of the Society of St. Pius X , but was very close to it and advocated its interests in Germany. Klumb is now trying to "make the deceased " most honorable friend " immortal".

" Beyond the Catholic," says Von Thronstahl's website under "Ecclesia Militans" , the priest enjoys great popularity in "our defensive, conservative and avant-garde subculture" "

- Michael Sontheimer, Peter Wensierski : Article on God's right in the mirror

Articles clearly referring to right-wing extremist positions are also published on the band's website. For example, Klumb writes in his essay “Election Notification” about his desire to establish a national dictatorship in Germany. Klumb is similarly open in his texts. The album Germanium Metallicum includes songs like Staatsfeind / Heimatfreund , National Anarchy in the EU or Respect the Hierarchy . The album received a positive response from Junge Freiheit : Never before has [Klumb] carried out such a massive all-round blow against both personal opponents and the enemies of Europe - the enemies of freedom all over the world.
