The Vuntut National Park ( English Vuntut National Park of Canada , French Parc national du Canada Vuntut ) is a Canadian national park in the northern Yukon (Northwest Canada ). The 4,345 km² park was founded in 1995 and is administered by Parks Canada , together with the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation . It was founded after extensive negotiations between Vuntut Gwitchin and the government of Canada over claims for territorial claims. The park is an IUCN Category II ( National Park ) protected area .

The park is on the tentative list for inclusion as World Heritage in Canada , together with the Ivvavik National Park and the Herschel Island - Qikiqtaruk Territorial Park .

"Vuntut" means something like "between the lakes" in the Gwitchin language.

The park borders Ivvavik National Park to the north and Alaska and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge there to the west . It is very natural and there are no paved roads. The park is located in the British Mountains , the eastern foothills of the Brooks range and is bordered to the south by the Old Crow River . With a height of 1150  m , Vuntut High Point in the western part of the park is the highest point in the park.

The nearest town is Old Crow , about 50 km south as the crow flies.

Reindeer of the Porcupine caribou herd (Rangifer tarandus granti), a subspecies of the tundra reindeer , give birth to their offspring in this region of the three adjoining parks.

tourism

Due to its remote location and since there is no extended access to the park, only a few tourists visit it each year (around 25). The park can be visited without a permit. A permit is required for various activities in the park, for example camping or landing in an aircraft.
