Władysław Filipowiak (born April 29, 1926 in Kaczyce near Cieszyn , † March 31, 2014 in Stettin ) was a Polish archaeologist and prehistorian .

Life

During the Second World War , Władysław Filipowiak had to work in mines and was active in the resistance against the German occupation . After the war he studied economics at the business academy in Stettin. During this time he took part in the excavations of the destroyed Szczecin Castle as a student, which aroused his interest in history. He studied early history with Józef Kostrzewski at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan and worked temporarily at the Archaeological Museum in Poznan . Under the influence of Witold Hensel , he devoted himself particularly to the early medieval Slavs .

On behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Art, Władysław Filipowiak began excavations in Wolin in 1952 , following on from the work of the German prehistoric Otto Kunkel . The following year he received his master's degree . From 1953 to 1955 he was the curator of the archaeological sites of the Poznan , Szczecin and Zielona Góra Voivodeships . In 1955 he was appointed director of the West Pomeranian Museum in Szczecin. Under his leadership until 2006, it achieved the status of a national museum. In doing so, he also included the German cultural heritage of Pomerania . In the 1960s he succeeded in returning looted art from the Soviet Union . He was a member of the International Council of Museums .

As head of the archaeological station of the IHKM PAN ( Instytut Historii Kultury Materialnej Polskiej Akademii Nauk ) in Wolin, he expanded the excavations to include the area of the Slavic tribe of the Wollins. By excavating evidence from several port facilities, the remains of a craftsmen's settlement and several burial grounds, he was able to prove that Wolin (Wollin, Jumne etc.) was an important trading center in the Baltic Sea region. Since then he has been considered by the public to be one of the discoverers of Vineta .

Władysław Filipowiak led three expeditions to Mali and Ghana in West Africa , which served to research the early history of the peoples of the southern Sahara and in particular of the Mali Empire . The results of the research trips benefited the African department of the National Museum in Szczecin.

It is known that he campaigned among Polish historians and politicians to ensure that the German prehistory of Pomerania and other now Polish areas is not negated. Together with his German colleagues from Greifswald, Stralsund and Schwerin, he successfully campaigned for the exchange of find artifacts and documentation between Western and Western Pomerania, which has so far been implemented gradually. This means that they are assigned to the respective area of origin, which was caused by the effects of the war and the subsequent separation, e.g. B. Pomerania was torn apart.

The German-Polish Pomerania Nostra Prize has been one of the awards and honors Władysław Filipowiak received since 2009 .
