Hot 97 , also known as WQHT , is a New York City radio station that has specialized in hip hop since the 1990s . The station has been broadcasting on VHF 97.1 MHz since 1988. Before that, the station could be received on the 103.5 MHz FM frequency and was accordingly called Hot 103 . In the hip-hop scene, the station is known for having broadcast battles and other controversies.

history

The history of Hot 97 goes back to the station W2XWG founded in 1940. Via various frequencies, name and program changes, including the The Beatles station WYNY, the license for the station was bought out in 1986 by Emmis Communications from Indianapolis , which then became a mix of R&B, pop, hip-hop and freestyle under the name Hot 103 , House and Rock broadcast. Hot 103 was the first broadcaster to feature Latin hip-hop on a regular basis. After the ratings fell in 1989, the station, renamed Hot 97, oriented itself towards a chart and Top 40 dominated programs. This decision was reversed in 1993 and from then on a program was broadcast that corresponded to that of the New York hip-hop station Kiss FM . From 1995 to 2005, the market research institute Arbitron , which examines the American radio market, lists Hot 97 as the most influential station in New York. After that, Power 105.1, founded in 2002, became more important.

Moderators

With the change to the hip-hop-heavy program, the staff was also changed. The well-known DJ Funkmaster Flex , who came to the station in 1990, stayed. The moderators of Yo! MTV raps Ed Lover and Doctor Dré , not to be confused with rapper Dr. Dre , were hired for the morning show. Other presenters are DJ Enuff, DJ Green Lantern , Fatman Scoop , Angie Martínez and Miss Jones .

Meaning in hip-hop

The station has hosted rivalries between rappers on several occasions, both on the air and with violence on site. At the beef between Nas and Jay-Z , the station was used as a forum for the mutually exchanged disstracks. The open feud began at the station's annual Summer Jam in 2001. The disputes between 50 Cent and Ja Rule , as well as Eminem and Benzino / The Source were also fought on the station, sometimes with call-ins from the conflicting parties into the current program .

There was also more tangible arguments around the station. During a 50 Cent interview in 2005, one of his companions was shot in the thigh by a member of the entourage around former G-Unit member The Game , who was also present in the lobby. After rapper Lil 'Kim was convicted of perjury in front of the studios for a shootout between companions of Capone-N-Noreaga and the Junior MAFIA group with an injured person in September 2001, she was sentenced to 1 year in prison. A fully automatic MAC-11 pistol was also used in the incident . There were other incidents with the rappers P. Diddy , Busta Rhymes , Cam'ron and others.

The landlord of the house in Greenwich Village where the studios are located filed an eviction lawsuit in 2006 over security concerns for the station's neighborhood because of the frequency of violence. The trigger was the shelling of the singer Jamal "Gravy" Wollard. When entering the building in April 2006, he suffered a gunshot wound to his buttocks. The surroundings of the studios are monitored by the NYPD with cameras.
