The Marriott World Trade Center , also known as World Trade Center 3 , was a 22-story hotel and was part of the World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan , New York City, until its demolition in September 2001 . It was opened in 1981 under the name Vista Hotel . The building was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill . In 1995 it was taken over by Marriott International and renamed the Marriott World Trade Center .
The hotel had connections with the North Tower (World Trade Center 1) and the South Tower (World Trade Center 2). Fashion stores, cafes and restaurants were housed in the connecting buildings.
The building was badly damaged by debris when the south tower (World Trade Center 2) collapsed in the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 . The hotel was completely destroyed when the north tower of the World Trade Center (World Trade Center 1) collapsed.
Planning and construction
The Vista Hotel was designed by the architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and built as part of the World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan. As such, it was named World Trade Center 3 . The construction company Tishman Construction , which had already built the other parts of the World Trade Center building, was responsible for the construction . Senior engineer Leslie E. Robertson was also involved in the construction of these buildings.
The Vista Hotel was completed on April 1, 1981 and opened on July 1, 1981. The building was originally owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the hotel chain KUO Hotels of Korea . Operations were under the management of Hilton Worldwide .
history
1993 terrorist attack
On February 26, 1993, the lower floors of the hotel were damaged in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center after a van with almost 700 kilograms of explosives, which was parked in the underground car park of the north tower, exploded at 12:18 p.m. Eastern American time. The Vista Hotel was only able to reopen in November 1994 after expensive renovation work .
In 1995 the hotel was taken over by the host Marriott Corporation and renamed the Marriott World Trade Center .
Terrorist attack on September 11, 2001
On September 11th the hotel was almost fully occupied and had over 1000 registered guests. A National Association for Business Economics meeting was being held at the hotel at the time of the attacks.
When American Airlines Flight 11 flew into the North Tower (WTC 1) at 8:46 a.m. local time, burning debris (including the aircraft's landing gear) fell on the hotel and damaged the roof and the top floors. It is also reported that people who jumped out of the windows of the burning north tower hit the roof of the building. FDNY fire officers used the building's lobby to direct evacuations from there. When the south tower (WTC 2) collapsed, it tore about half of the hotel with it. The rest of the building was destroyed by the collapsing north tower. Only the lowest floors of the Marriott Hotel were partially preserved.
All guests were evacuated from the hotel on time. Two employees and many of the firefighters who used the hotel as a base were killed. The total number of people killed at the Marriott Hotel is estimated at around 40.
After the attacks
The remains of the Marriott World Trade Center were demolished in January 2002. The place where the hotel stood was not built on again. The site is now part of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum . The name World Trade Center 3 was used again in a modified form in the new Three World Trade Center .
The hotel chain Host Marriott Corporation received an insurance benefit of $ 370 million in compensation for the destroyed World Trade Center 3 and the nearby, also damaged Marriott Hotel at the World Financial Center . In this context, Marriott terminated the rental agreement for the property, which actually ran until 2094, and returned it to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
A documentary entitled Hotel Ground Zero , released in 2009 on History television, explores the role of the hotel during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks from the perspective of surviving guests and employees.
