Vadim Robertovich rule ( Russian Вадим Робертович Регель ; born April 7, jul. / 20 April  1917 greg. , † 2004 ) was a Russian physicist and university teacher .

Life

Regel was the son of the noble botanist Robert Eduardowitsch Regel . In the 1930s, Regel worked in the Leningrad Physical Technical Institute (LFTI) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR). During the German-Soviet War he worked on the development of methods for demagnetizing the ships of the Baltic Fleet . In 1946 he became a member of the CPSU .

In 1946, Regel became a research associate in Moscow at the Institute for Physical Problems of the AN-SSSR , headed by Pyotr Leonidowitsch Kapiza . In addition, he became a lecturer at the chair for low-temperature physics in the physics faculty of Lomonossow University Moscow (MGU) in 1947 . He worked in the group of Anatoly Petrovich Alexandrow , which developed the isotope separation of uranium by thermal diffusion for the Soviet atomic bomb project.

In 1952 Regel switched to the Institute for Crystallography of the AN-SSSR and from 1954 taught at the Chair of Crystallography at the MGU. There he began experimentally investigating the effects of the thermal movement of atoms on the processes of plastic deformation and fracture in crystals and polymers .

In 1959, Regel returned to the LFTI and examined the processes of deformation and fracture of composite materials . In the 1970s he headed the Laboratory for High Strength Physics and was Vice Director of the LFTI. In 1980 he returned to the Institute of Crystallography as head of the Laboratory for Mechanical Properties of Crystals. His main focus was on fracture mechanics and the crystal defect structure of crystals with regard to the kinetics of deformation processes.

Regel's older brother was the physicist Anatoly Robertowitsch Regel .
