Valery Sergejewitsch Popow ( Russian Валерий Сергеевич Попов ; at the World Chess Federation FIDE Valerij Popov; born September 10, 1974 in Leningrad ) is a Russian chess player and trainer.

Career

Popov learned chess from his sister when he was five. He was trained in the chess school in the northern Leningrad Kalinin district. His first success was a successful qualification for the city championship in 1990 at the age of sixteen.

He was named international master by the World Chess Federation in 1994 and grandmaster in 1999 . At the Russia Cup 2001 in Kazan , he won second place tied with Valery Filippov . In 2001 and 2006 he won the Saint Petersburg City Championship. In 2008 he finished second behind Radosław Wojtaszek at the European rapid chess championships in Warsaw , and in 2018 he won the European rapid chess championships in Skopje . Furthermore, he achieved the following results: 1st place at the Bydgoszcz Open (2001), 1st place at the White Nights Festival in Saint Petersburg (2001, 2008), 2nd place half a point behind the winner Boris Gratschow at the 42nd International Chess Festival (Meisteropen) in Biel (2009).

He played club chess in Russia for Severstal Tscherepowez , TPS Saransk , Lentransgaz , SZAGS and Michail Tschigorin (the last three from Saint Petersburg). With Lentransgaz , Michail Tschigorin and TPS Saransk he also took part in the European Club Cup several times . With the Sollentuna SK he won the Swedish team championship in 2002 , 2003 , 2006 and 2007 and took part in the European Club Cup in 2007. He was Georgian team champion in 2015 with Samegrelo in Ureki , Latvian in 2019 with Termo Eko / RŠF in Riga .

Popow is married to WGM Tatiana Moltschanowa (* 1980). He works as a youth trainer and chess organizer. His students include Yevgeny Romanov , Alexander Schimanow and Daniil Linchevsky .
