Upper walls
Obermauern is a fraction of the municipality of Virgen in East Tyrol. It lies at an altitude of 1,303 meters and, in addition to the branched out core settlement, also includes the Budam courtyards. In 2001 333 inhabitants lived in Obermauern, making Obermauern the second largest group in terms of population after the main town of Virgen. With the pilgrimage church Maria Schnee , the fraction has the most famous building in the community.
location
The center of Obermauern lies west of the Göriach fraction and north of the Niedermauern fraction and is traversed by the Nilbach. The branched out core settlement is connected to the Virgentaler Landesstraße from the south by a road, and there are also roads to Göriach, Marian and Budam. Budam is at an altitude of 1,563 meters and includes a chapel and two courtyards, which form the highest populated points in the municipality.

Pilgrimage church Maria Schnee
The most important sight of Obermauern is the pilgrimage church Maria Schnee . The late Gothic building was built around 1456, but also includes early Gothic and possibly even older components of a previous church. The pilgrimage church received its special significance from the rich, Gothic fresco decoration with the Passion cycle . Further frescoes show the childhood story of Jesus , scenes from the life of his mother Mary and the martyrdom of St. Sebastian .

The Budam Chapel is elevated above the two farms.
