Walter Otto Hugo Karl Amtrup (born March 15, 1904 in Hamburg , German Empire ; † August 7, 1974 in Erfurt , GDR ) was a German actor , voice actor , opera singer ( bass ) and acting teacher.
Life
Walter Amtrup was born on March 15, 1904 as the son of a district judge in Hamburg-Altona . He graduated from a secondary school in Lüneburg and from 1925 to 1931 attended the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin-Charlottenburg , where he was trained as an actor and opera singer.
Amtrup had his first engagement in 1932/33 as an opera singer at the Landestheater Altenburg . This was followed by stage positions as an actor in Meißen , Neisse , Wilhelmshaven , Hanau , Bunzlau , at the Schwerin State Theater and at the municipal theaters in Chemnitz until the end of the war . From 1947 to 1951 he worked at the Flensburg Theater , after which he resigned from the stage for a few years and worked as a magazine administrator.
In 1955 he moved with his family to the GDR to take up an engagement as a character actor at the Erfurt Municipal Theaters . After eleven years of activity, he moved to the Meininger Theater , where he ended his artistic career in 1969.

Walter Amtrup was with the former opera singer Johanna Amtrup, geb. Kieling, married; The marriage resulted in three children: Karin (* 1936), Turid (* 1943) and Niels-Torsten (* 1951). The marine biologist and dolphin researcher Karsten Brensing (* 1967) is Walter Amtrup's grandson.
