Karsten Brensing (born January 18, 1967 in Erfurt ) is a German marine biologist , behavioral scientist and author who works as a scientific reviewer and author of popular science books for a better understanding of animals.

Life

education

Karsten Brensing attended POS 27 in Erfurt from 1974 to 1984 , followed by training as an electrician at VEB Funkwerk Erfurt . In 1987 he passed his Abitur at the adult education center in Erfurt . In June 1989 he left the former GDR illegally .

From 1989 to 1996. studied Brensing Biology (basic studies from 1989 to 1991 at the Georg-August-University of Goettingen ; advanced studies from 1991 to 1996 at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel ) with the conclusion biologist (Major: Biological Oceanography).

From 1997 to 2004 he was a lecturer at the Free University of Berlin , where he did his doctorate in behavioral biology under Dietmar Todt in 2004 on the behavior of bottlenose dolphins in swim-with-dolpins programs (dolphins in swimming programs and dolphin therapy ). He conducted his research on stress in dolphins during 1998 at Dolphins Plus in Key Largo , Florida , and from 2000 to 2003 during visits to Dolphin Reef in Israel .

Even as a 17-year-old had Brensing 1984, a dive training at Lake Senftenberg with the diving test B completed. This was followed in 1988 by training as a diving instructor in Greifswald , in 1992 as a professional diver certification in Kiel , in 1999 a license to dive with rebreather equipment and finally in 2007 the Divemaster in Berlin . At the same time, he obtained his sport boat license (motorboat inland and lake ) in Hamburg in 1989 and the sailing license of the German Sailing Association in 1992 . He sailed a lot with the Friendships of the University of Kiel in the western Baltic Sea , crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1997 as a fellow sailor on the sailing yacht Auweia and occasionally works as a skipper , for example for the travel journalist Dirk Engelhardt.

Professional career

Research diver

From 1992 to 1996 Karsten Brensing worked as a research diver at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel during his studies .

Expert and consultant

From 2002 to 2005 Brensing worked as a consultant for Cornelsen Verlag . As a consultant for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), he prepared an expertise for ACCOBAMS , the Convention for the Protection of the Whales of the Black Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and the adjacent Atlantic Zones . From 2005 he worked first as Conservation Manager and later until 2014 as scientific director of the Germany office of the WDC.

In 2009 he was a scientific advisor for the film The Secret of the Whales in South Africa and carried out a commissioned work for the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), the noise mapping in "National Implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive " , FKZ 3509 82 0500. In 2010 he did a contract for the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), the feasibility study of noise mapping of the German sea (FKZ 363 01 234).

In 2010 Brensing was a member of the German delegation of the ICES Working Group on Marine Mammal Ecology , together with 14 other scientists, whose report also deals with noise pollution and noise reduction in the oceans.

From 2010 to 2016 Brensing was a member of the working group of the European Commission TSG11, which dealt with the technical possibilities and legal regulations for noise reduction in the sea.

Animal rights activist

As an expert, Brensing is also committed to the welfare of dolphins on a political level ( German Bundestag ). The results of his own work on stress in dolphins have made him a consistent critic of therapy with dolphins.

As part of his work for the WDC, Brensing sued the city of Nuremberg for several years regarding the local zoo with dolphinarium . In 2011, he gained the right to inspect files in two instances, whereby it was revealed that animals kept there in zoology are, if necessary, placed under psychotropic drugs.

He was a member of the working group of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture for the revision of the keeping conditions of zoo animals, but left this group in 2013 due to the unscientific working methods of the representatives of the zoos. He presented his arguments for resigning at a hearing in the Bundestag.

writer

Brensing also works as a freelance book author. His first book, Personality Rights for Animals , was published in 2013 with a foreword by Hannes Jaenicke .

His non-fiction book Das Mysterium der Tiere , published in 2017, is a bestseller. It achieved 9th place on the Spiegel bestseller list (43/2017 edition) in the hardcover non-fiction category. The book was received in Geo , the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung and the Free Press .

How animals think and feel was named Knowledge Book of the Year in 2019 .

TV presenter

In April and May 2019, Karsten Brensing and actress Lisa Feller presented the entertainment program Das Tier in Dir , which was broadcast in three episodes on WDR television at weekly intervals .

family

Karsten Brensing is married to the science journalist Katrin Linke ; They tell of their escape from the GDR in 1989 in their book "A Love Without Borders". The couple have two sons. The actor Walter Amtrup was Karsten Brensing's grandfather.
