Walter J. Schütz

Walter Justus Schütz (born July 27, 1930 in Bochum ; † November 27, 2013 in Bonn ) was a German communications scientist and press statistician.

From 1949 to 1953, after graduating from secondary school in Deggendorf , Walter J. Schütz studied German , journalism , geography and history at the universities of Münster (as a student of Walter Hagemann ) and Munich . During this time he also worked as a freelancer for the Wattenscheider local newspapers, and in the spring of 1953 as an intern in the news desk of the NWDR's broadcasting house in Cologne . From 1953 he was a research assistant at Hagemann's Institute for Journalism at the University of Münster.

In 1954 he was in charge of the first collection of the German daily newspapers with their 1,500 different editions at the time, which will be followed by seven more in the decades thereafter. He carried out the last collection of deadlines in 2012. His extensive work on the quantitative structure, structure and development of the German press market after 1949 earned him the name "Bonns Mr. Pressestatistik " (FAZ). From 1960 to 1995, Schütz worked in the Federal Government 's Press and Information Office, initially as an assistant officer and from 1967 on as a government advisor in the press documentation, press archive and library department , most recently as head of the media department with the rank of ministerial councilor . From 1970 onwards, Schütz was jointly responsible for the federal government's media reports and also for the federal government's communication science research projects. He lived in Bonn and Berlin.

Between 1956 and 1993, Schütz was together with Günter Kieslich editor of " journalism. Quarterly Bulletins for Communication Research " . In 1984/85 he was a member of the commission for the preparation of the supplementary course in journalism in Hanover. After numerous teaching positions at several universities, including Mainz, Bochum, Munich, Münster and Bonn, he taught in Hanover from 1995 as an honorary professor at the Hanover University of Music and Theater . Schütz was co-editor of the Lexicon Media Law, which has been published since 1977 (5th edition 2010).

His eight key-date collections, with which he (most recently in 2012) recorded all issues of German daily newspapers with all their variants, are groundbreaking. In connection with this he created the terms journalistic unit , editorial unit and full editorial team.

Walter J. Schütz died after a brief, serious illness on November 27, 2013 in Bonn.

Memberships

Schütz was a member of the German Society for Journalism and Communication Studies (DGPuK); he was its treasurer for many years. He was also a member of the study group broadcasting and history, which he co-founded in 1969, as well as the philatelic motif group paper and printing.

Honors

In 1983 the University of Münster awarded Walter J. Schütz the title of Dr. phil. honoris causa.

In 1992 he was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon.

In 1995 the Hanover University of Music and Drama appointed him honorary professor.

On his 65th birthday, the commemorative publication “Publizistik. Contributions to media development ” (UVK, Konstanz 1995); it contains several articles on Schütz, an overview of biographical data and a bibliography for the period from 1954 to 1994.
