Walter Leibrecht

Walter Leibrecht (born September 3, 1927 in Karlsruhe , † February 24, 2007 in Dunedin ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Life

Leibrecht studied from 1945 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg , later also at the University of Heidelberg , the University of Zurich and the University of Chicago . 1953 with a dissertation on the philosopher Johann Georg Hamann for Dr. theol. PhD, he became a lecturer and student supervisor at Columbia University . In 1955 he went to the Harvard Divinity School as Paul Tillich's assistant . From 1958 he taught as a professor at the Garrett Theological Seminary at Northwestern University in Evanston (Illinois) , later at the University of Chicago.

In 1963 he founded the Schiller International University (then still Schiller College ) to enable American students to study under the conditions of the college system in Europe. The first campus was in Kleiningersheim am Neckar Castle , which later served as the family's apartment. Further campuses were opened in other European countries. In 1969 the German campus was relocated to Heidelberg . Leibrecht served as president of this private university until his retirement.

Leibrecht founded the Aktion Humane Schule association in 1974 and planned to found a party in 1976. From 1983 to 1990 Leibrecht was President of the German Paul-Tillich Society .

Leibrecht had been with Lydia, born in 1955. Brandstetter, married. He had five children, including the FDP politician Harald Leibrecht .
