Walter Schuyler

Walter Scribner Schuyler (born April 26, 1850 in Ithaca , New York , † February 17, 1932 in Carmel-by-the-Sea , California ) was an American university professor and brigadier general in the United States Army (USA). In 1910 he was the first in command of what is now the United States Army Pacific (USARPAC; then still Military District of Hawaii ), a main command of the US Army based in Fort Shafter , Hawaii.

Career

After completing his studies at the United States Military Academy in West Point , New York, Schuyler began his service in 1870 with the United States Cavalry (which no longer exists as a separate armed force ) , with which he participated in various missions in Arizona , Wyoming , Colorado and Montana participated in the Indian Wars.

From the late 1870s he taught as a professor of military science at Cornell University in his hometown of Ithaca.

In 1898, Schuyler fought in Puerto Rico , Cuba, and the Philippines during the Spanish-American War . In 1904 he was deployed as a military observer with the Imperial Russian Army in Manchuria and then served in the General Staff of the US Army until 1906 .

In 1910, Schuyler served in the rank of colonel as the first in command of the then newly formed Military District in Hawaii , from which the later US Army Pacific emerged . In 1911 he was promoted to brigadier general and commanded a short time a brigade of the US Cavalry in San Antonio , Texas , before he in the same year for the commanding general in Fort Riley , Kansas , was appointed.

Schuyler came in 1913 in the retirement .
