Walter Studer (born April 22, 1918 in Adelboden ; † April 27, 1986 ) was a Swiss photographer .

Life / work

Walter Studer's father Fritz Studer was an amateur photographer and friends with the photographers Emanuel Gyger and Arnold Klopfstein from Adelboden. Walter Studer and his brother Alfred got to know the processes in the photo lab as children in the converted bathroom.

Walter Studer did his photography apprenticeship with Robert Kissling and his successor Gottfried Tschanz in Spiez from 1935 to 1937, after which he worked in various health resorts, such as B. Mürren , Villars and Rigi-Kaltbad as sports photographer. Between 1941 and 1948 he worked as a reporter for the Bern office of Photopress Zurich (today Keystone-SDA ).

In 1948 Walter Studer opened his own shop in Bern. In 1951 he merged with Fernand Rausser , Hans Keusen and Kurt Blum to form the “Groupe carré”. During this time he also portrayed various personalities such as Grace Kelly , Elizabeth Taylor , Louis Armstrong , Carl Albert Loosli , Mani Matter and Meret Oppenheim . In addition to work for the press, orders for industry and public companies were added from the 1960s. For example, he took pictures for SBB that served as poster subjects or for brochures and calendars. In 1962, Walter Studer went to Chile with the Swiss national soccer team and then toured the country. From 1974 he took photos for the SBB-Revue Schweiz-Suisse-Svizzera and the Swissair Gazette together with his son Peter Studer, who today manages his estate.

Walter Studer was married to Rose Roth (1918–2000) since 1943, with whom he had four children.
