action

In the municipality of Greenfield, after Samuel "Sam" Gold (Daniele Vargas) has been appointed mayor, the sheriff post must also be filled; Frank Lloyd (Serge Marquand), chosen by gold, is - as his closest confidante - as set, but there is a tumult in the hall when the rancher Bob Baker (Benito Stefanelli) opposes the lousy show. Thrown out of the saloon, he gets unexpected help from a stranger (Giuliano Gemma), who reveals himself to Gold as Sheriff Gary Ryan, legally appointed by Judge Anderson. The city leaders have to grudgingly accept this, but immediately plan to eliminate the stranger: He is supposed to take over the guarding of a hastily arranged gold transport, while a horde of Mexican outlaws commissioned by Lloyd - in reality a bad scoundrel - is supposed to ambush the carriage. In the Owell Rocks stopover, Ryan makes the acquaintance of the player Martin Heywood (Germán Cobos), who was robbed of his winnings by the same bandit shortly before. With him and a few other loyal followers, the sheriff succeeds through targeted use of dynamite in defeating the attackers who appear soon after the journey has continued; then Ryan and Heywood go their separate ways for the time being.

This failure forces the villainous mayor to devise a new trap. Lloyd has the brilliant idea: he sends the drunkard Matthews (Riccardo Pizzuti) to the hotel "Sandor's" and then shoots him unnoticed through a window in the presence of Ryan; the hotel employee Cheryl (Gia Sandri) later testifies to the perpetration of the tin star wearer. Imprisoned, he receives surprising help from Baker, who not only reciprocates for the previous support in the election spectacle, but also hopes that Ryan will be able to solve the theft of his and many other cattle in the region . Now on the run, he meets Heywood again in the village of Poorland, but soon has to fight off several bounty hunters. After a visit to the ranch of Baker, who was fatally wounded in the outbreak, he meets his niece Evelyn (Teresa Gimpera), who refers him to Pueblo Conejos, where the blacksmith Jeremiah Prescott (Furio Meniconi) is hiding for reasons that are not entirely transparent. Ryan finds out the exact way from Padre Carmelo (Nello Pazzafini), but Lloyd has also made his way to the poor commune, and the local "Concho" Diaz (Umberto Raho) is hoping for a fat bonus, he has the conversation between Ryan and the padre overheard. Although Ryan learns of the secret of the cleverly manipulated branding, while he is looking for branding irons that can be used as evidence, the blacksmith and his little niece are murdered by Lloyd's henchmen.

Ryan takes possession of the branding irons with great physical effort, but falls into Lloyd's hands on the way back. He also found the marking equipment that had been entrusted to Evelyn, who had since traveled to Pueblo Conejos, and which was undone by a broken car. However, the villain makes the mistake of not killing Ryan immediately because he is after the enormous bounty; this will take revenge, also because Heywood has meanwhile arrived in Greenfield and first of all tries to convince Judge Anderson (Carlo Hintermann) of Ryan's innocence, who however needs proof. This is what the smart player teaches because Cheryl leans towards him. By knowing about their complicity, Ryan feigns sexual interest before rudely slapping the truth about the Matthews murder out of her. Almost at the same time, Lloyd and his prisoner Ryan arrive in Greenfield, and when the former is in distress due to the hotel lady's confession, he rides to Gold's ranch house. There the lawful sheriff was able to overpower him despite Evelyn's brief hostage-taking, and Mayor Gold was also given jurisdiction. Ryan and Evelyn plan a future together.

Reviews

Hans-Jürgen Weber wrote in Filmecho / Filmwoche Heft 38, 1967 : “One takes pleasure in the story, especially since the director (...) took great care and excitement in a precisely crafted way without fashionable recourse to brutal perversions knows how to create and increase. "Friedemann Hahn also emphasizes the violence of the strip:" A plot tailored for you (cf. the stars of the genre): brutality like pearls on a chain. " P. Perona in Civiltà dell'Immagine from August 1967 judges negatively: “In addition to the monotony of the narrative form, it is the conventionality of the story that amazes. The usual story is only minimally changed; the title already reveals the whole drama: "Wanted". "Despite a few positive aspects, the Evangelical Film-Observer finally comes to a negative result:" Italian Giuliano Gemma color broad-walled west of unheard of harshness. It completely destroys some of the positives of this film - such as the clear legal relationships. Only something for the steadfast fans among adults. "
