action
The plot of the film is set in the near future and is largely set in the fictional state of Turaqistan. For the first time, the war there is completely in private hands, more precisely in that of the large American corporation "Tamerlane", which is led by a former Vice President of the USA. The company's manager hires Brand Hauser, a hit man, to kill the politician Omar Sharif. This stands in the way of the company's business interests. Hauser is hired to camouflage his job as organizer of a Tamerlane fair, the climax of which is the wedding of Britney Spears-like pop singer Yonica Babyyeah to the son of a corrupt Arab ally of the former Vice President.
Shortly after Hauser's arrival in Turaqistan, he met the critical journalist Natalie Hegalhuzen. The principled woman fascinates him immediately and prompts Hauser to rethink his assignment and help her with her research. As a result, he inevitably messes with his clients. In a first argument, he can supposedly kill one of them, Walken. Hauser also develops fatherly feelings for the pop singer who, at first glance, is only interested in superficialities and tries to dissuade her from the media-effective wedding. After a rapprochement between the journalist, Yonica and Hauser, the two women watch him in a bloody argument with thugs, which ends fatally for the latter.
Yonica and the journalist flee from Hauser and while the pop singer is preparing for her wedding, Hegalhuzen is kidnapped and threatened with death by supposed terrorists, actually filmmakers who want to earn money. Hauser saves her and escapes with her through the war zone, which was previously inaccessible to journalists. Back in the secure zone, Hauser warns Omar Sharif of upcoming assassinations, and thanks for that he tells him where his second client is.
Hauser decides to finally get this out of the way, but meets again with Walken, who is now on a wheelchair. Hauser learns from him that he was only used, that Walken killed his wife to turn him into an emotionless killing machine and that his daughter Yonica, who was kidnapped at the time, is Babyyeah. Hauser tries to prevent the wedding by all means, which he succeeds, but his adversary can save himself and has a guided missile fired at the sealed off exhibition hall. The "precise" Tamerlane missile misses its target and instead kills him and his followers. Hauser, Hegalhuzen and Yonica can finally flee the country.
Reviews
John Anderson wrote in Variety magazine on May 5, 2008 that the film taught that a parody shouldn't be too close to reality. The film is close to being funny - but only close (“It's so close to being funny you can just about taste it - just about”). It seems a bit like a comedy from the 1960s with Alan Arkin .
Frank Scheck wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on April 28, 2008 that the intentions of the film's authors were commendable, but that the film was an almost complete failure. Casting the role of a hit man with John Cusack is "psychologically strange". Some gags would work, but most would come off flat.
The lexicon of the international film judged: "Political satire without any particular impact that evades into sometimes embarrassing gags."
