Washington County is a county in the state of Rhode Island in the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 126,979 people and a population density of 147 people per square kilometer. The county seat is South Kingstown . 1

The county has an area of 1,458 square kilometers, of which 596 square kilometers are water. It borders Kent County to the north and New London County ( Connecticut ) to the west .
history
Washington County was formed on June 3, 1729 as Kings County from parts of Providence County and renamed Washington County on October 29, 1781 . Washington County is also known as South County. It was named after George Washington , the first President of the United States of America.
Four places in the county have National Historic Landmark status . 132 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 26, 2018).

Demographics
According to the 2000 census , Washington County's population was 123,546 in 46,907 households and 32,037 families. The population was made up of 94.82 percent white, 0.92 percent African American and 1.50 percent Asian. 1.44 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. The per capita income was $ 25,530; 4.2 percent of families and 7.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
